a few months back Ken H had a short piece on TMPS. I am wondering if anybody has added non-oem type monitoring systems on their tires yet.
And Ken H ..did you complete your investigation and with what result.
Thanks

Hi,
I have the Pressure Pro system on all 6 tires.
http://www.advantagepressurepro.com/. The system also allows you to add
sensors to the towd as well. Installation in pretty easy. On the rear coach
wheels you simply screw the sensors on . In the front however I added 80 mm
calipers and the sensors fouled on the caliper so I had to add 45 degree
metal valve stems to the Eagle Wheels to clear the calipers. I really like
the system. I can easily check tire pressures. Usually there is a 5 lb
increase in the front tires and a 3 lb in the back under normal driving
conditions. Since the system is sensitive to a 5 percent drop in pressure
from the set point often times the system will alert when it is very cold
and the coach is sittng. I suppose using nitrogen would alleviate that
problem. Apparently the life of the batteries in the sensors is three years
but I unplug the power from the control unit and my sensors seem to still be
active and reading after 4 years. The down side is that on my unit the
batteries in the sensors are not user replaceable apparently, and it costs
50 bucks to replace each one which is pretty high.
I know there are some new systems out there that are much cheaper and work
just as well. I have not had an opportunity to use the system in anger for a
low or flattening tire while on the road but have no doubt that unless it is
a catastophic blowout the system would give me enough time to pull over
safely to change the tire.
By the way, I have BFG Commercial TA's on Eagle Wheels.
Thanks

I purchased the Smart Tire system from Camping World, which has in wheel sensors that report on pressure and temps. Got 8, for the coach and the trailer.
They worked great for about two years. I understand that they I need to go to Camping World and have several of the sensors reset. I have yet to do that.
The temp sensor was a lifesaver. 10 miles from home at the end of a trip cross-country and back, the high temp alert went off for the right rear forward tire. I was tring to avoid a rest stop so close to home, but pulled over with the alert and went to the head, telling my wife to check out the tire outside. Midway through my business she came screaming back that it was on fire. A quick shot of the fire extinguisher put it out, and later diagnosis was a bad bearing that was just about to traumaticly let go.
So I like the device and would recommed it.

I don't pretend to know much of the tire monitor equipment but I will pass on that when I inquired about them to the mechanic, he said they are not reliable. Thats both OEM and add on.
He said of all repairs or complaints he gets, its the tire monitors. He feels they have a long way to go before they are perfected and become reliable.

What is the reliability factor for information that comes anecdotally from mechanics?
I'm not criticizing mechanics, especially not the Oracles of wisdom here who work on GMCs.
But mechanics are biased by several factors. They need to fix things and get them out the door. They mostly serve people who are NOT mechanical.
They can't take a chance on things that are not 100% reliable.
I would consider carefully the criticism of a reliable mechanic but I often feel their advice does not apply to me and I am often right. (and the times i was wrong I'm blaming on my meds)
So, if for $200 I can get something that will give me some data on my tires, it's probably worth it.
Knowing me, the device would compel me to check on it and calibrate it relentlessly thereby making me infinitely more tuned in to my tire pressure than i otherwise would have been.

You have it pretty well figured out Dave. I check mine a lot more now with the system than I did before. I got the Tire Sentry as Arch had it on his and was the only one that user can change batteries. 3 year warranty. Mine are 4 years old now and at the factory. They are going over it good for me, under "warranty". I have found the company to be pretty attentive to my needs. Not cheap though. My monitor has a GMC and toad on it so they do know about GMC wheel setup and make one just for it. 700 bux for 10 transmitters and the monitor.
