Is anyone using a hand held GPS unit for tracking with Microsoft Streets and Trips on a laptop? If so, what make and model?

Not to quite answer your question, but easiest thing is to buy MS Streets with the GPS (USB)puck. Otherwise, you need a GPS unit that puts out the required NEMA string. Plus, you need a GPS connecting cable to the laptop; either USB or DB-9. USB being the easiest to deal with.
Having said all that, I have an older Magellen with a power cable and DB-9. I think right now, the cable is more expensive than just buying the puck with the MS Streets package.

I am aware of the puck. I had one but it went south. Also, it is of no use when I get to the hunting areas and am out in the woods. I need a display for that.

Yup, that is what my 10+ year old Garmin eMap had and it worked just fine with the laptop and it also guided me out of the woods many times. It died this past summer and Garmin no longer supports or services it, so, the need for a new one. I don't want to, and cannot really afford to, buy two units. I was really wondering if any of the Garmin eTrex units are capable of working with the computer in the same manner as the eMap.

Hi Jim
The eTrex Legend can be output NMEA. I would think most Garmin devices
would be the same. You can get the manuals for most of the Garmin products
at
http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual.jsp
Search the PDF file for NMEA to get to the appropriate section of the
manual.
My eTrex came with a data cable but I needed to buy the external power/data
cable to use it in the car (current cost is about $33US at GPS City).
The cost of the MS Streets & Trips with the GPS puck at Best Buy is only $30
more than the software alone.

Jim,
This is actually something that I have been doing for years, but I abandon strips and treats years ago.
Do you Currently have an hand held GPS?
If so what make-model?
Most are capable of some active location output, typically as NMEA 0183. You will need a serial port to USB adapter unless:
A - the handheld is new enough to do USB directly - Or
B - your laptop is so old it still has a serial port - Or
C - you spring for a serial port card to plug into the laptop.
I have done this with 5 different GPS units (three of which still live) to MSStreets, Street Atlas and six marine navigation programs.

Yup, me too, except I still use Streets and Trips as well as Street Atlas, Topo, and a couple other not so well knowns.

Yah, but try and find that information in any of their ads. As noted above, I have been using one (actually more than one) for several years so am very cognizant of what is required to use one with a computer. The problem is, finding the necessary info to purchase a replacement without buying, testing, returning until one is found. I have had a couple of different pucks (one died, the other won't run on XP or later), and tested others for other people.
My requirements are pretty simple. Since I tromp around in the woods a lot, I want a hand held, preferably with map. If it has mapping capability I can also use it on the road. Very often the LT does not go with. However, in the coach on longer trips, I prefer to use the LT where I can actually see the map at a quick glance as I drive.
That is my next to really long description. Any suggestions or preferably direct knowledge of such a beast would be greatly appreciated.

It has been my experience that most standalone unit THAT ARE NOT road navigators have position output capability. You will not find this in the advertising, but you can download and read the manual for most units at the manufacturers website. I know this is true of Garmin, but there are so many on the market and I really only pay attention to those for marine application.
There is another work around. Buy what ever handheld you like and go to E-bay and get another GPS puck for ~30$us.
Don’t be embarrassed to take one back. If the store does have a functional unit to play with, there is no way to know if you can make it do what you want it to do. A couple of years ago a wasted a day and made myself well known at several local stores doing just that and that was after I had read the manuals online.
Hopefully someone in the group has direct experience that will help more than I can.

I guess that is what I am going to have to do. Would like to get an ARPS unit up and running too, but I think that is waaay off in the future.

One of my Chinese gps units has quit. It blinks but does not report the location. So much for that 20 bux. Buy a good one. Deluo is a good one. For APRS, get a serial plug or ps 2.
