How does the oil temp compare to the coolant temp when the engine has reached normal operating temperature and not under excessive load? As in cruising down the highway on an 80 degree day or in city driving at a stop light?

Just wondering how much of a difference is observed.

Larry,

I generally see 35*F-50*F higher temperature oil in the pan.

It can be very different depending on where you measure. With a sensor tee'ed off the oil out to cooler line above the filter, just below the headers, temps ran scary high, like 260 and more.

With the same sensor relocated on the same line but near the radiator, the temps dropped way down. Tops I ever saw was 240 on a very hard uphill pull with a trailer.

Measuring the temps on the line out from the radiator oil cooler, (the other line) at least this week, the oil has been cooler than the water.

I think the early 260 readings were in part radiated heat from the headers. Before I figured that out, and relocated the sensor, I went crazy with now unnecessary oil coolers.

From what I have seen, water temps rise first as the thermostat does its job. Oil temp is more related to load. Pulling a trailer over a grade for me resulted in oil temps leading the water temps, if that makes sense.

Still working on it.

Neil, makes lots of sense. As most know, I monitor everything but the wheel bearings and the oil. I had wanted to monitor the oil but could never get a good answer to my questions. I have an RX-7 cooler with a 175 degree thermostat in it. I find that it rarely opens unless it is a hot summer day. I have it in line after the aluminum radiator. I would like to have a sensor somewhere in the network but not sure where to put it. On the vdub I have one and it never gets above 200, realizing these are two completely different setups. That temp is in the pan, on a hot summer day. Don't know how accurate the reading is but I think not far off. Maybe you can email me with some of the stuff that you have done. I would appreciate that as not to tie up the thread here, with lots of details.
Thanks,
Dan
