Just a curious question, has anyone ever measured the sound volume in the cockpit comparing headers to exhaust manifolds?

Heat is the big difference here. In my own experience removing the
cast headers and moving the mufflers to the back made a heck of a
difference to the inside temperature, especially after
stopping........Terry

Thorly Headers for the GMC will come Ceramic coated. only. The
original Nickle coating has gone up to a point that they want to get
away from them.
These are the Tri Y design that is used to develop low end torque.
The noise that you hear is very minor. Concentrate on gasketing the
engine hatch.

That would make sense regarding the heat. I have headers with two mufflers right after the headers. I need a new exhaust system next spring and intend to go to the 3" exhaust with the single flowmaster muffler in the rear. I'll start a new post for info on that item though.

Thanks

Hi Ray

I can tell you that running open headers early Sunday morning with 10.5-1 pistons convinced the guy across the street to put the baffles back in his Harley!!

Ray, I went from somewhat leaky stock manifolds and 2 mufflers upfront system to Jim K's 3" muffler in the rear system 2 years ago, and the difference is night and day better. I don't know for sure how much is moving the mufflers and how much was getting rid of the leaks, but far and away the best thing I've done so far. It actually inspired me to put a stereo back in it this summer. There was no point in doing so before. I never measured it with my sound meter, but there's so many other things going on, (like I need to do body/frame pads soon) that I'm not sure how good the readings would be anyway. But, you will definitely notice a difference if your stock system has problems already.

The exhaust on our coach was a leaking mess. I bought a set of headers from Marcus Magee in Rochester, NY and had them coated inside and out by Swain Tech near Rochester. The headers were used but in great shape and off a coach he parted out. Next I bought Jim K's 3" S/S rear muffler system.

The old system was weird. Off the manifolds they had 2" with a bell increasing to 2 1/2" for entry in the mufflers along with one of Rube's homemade Wye's from the mufflers out to the rear. Where the 2' was attached to the manifolds the gaskets were leaking. The manifold bolts were not tight. I used Remflex gaskets in mounting the headers. The exhaust runner through the frame must have eaten at least 6 Blu-Mol saws-all blades when I cut it out. The pipe was crystalized and just ate the blades.

Since the change two years ago the coach runs great and I love the sound out of the exhaust. Also it is much quieter and cooler inside the coach while driving and after shut down.

Five of the best things I did for our coach are as followsÚ

1. Jim K's 4 bags system
2. Jim K's 3" S/S rear muffler exhaust
3. Gary Rockwell's aluminum intake manifold
4. Eagle wheels and Michlein tires
5. A Dick Patterson carb

The coach is a dream to drive.
