We had one of these map tables in our Six-Pac cabover camper when I was a kid. Anyone know where to get one?

Chris,

If you are interested how to make a successful alternative, I will tell you.

I have done several of these for owners (usually at a significant cost). The cheaper upgrade works pretty well, and where water coming into the cabin in great waves is not a issue it would be completely satisfactory.

If you have a table top, that is a good start on the budget version. Find the chart (map in your case) you want to use. I always buy a new chart for each. They are never table size, so I and date a visible corner (you don't need to). My AAA USA is 37x23 just for reference.

At a local drawing (engineering type) shop, get some of the double sided tape for drawing board covers. They will know what I mean. It is very thin.

Cut the chart down to fit inside the tape width. Remember the round corners....

Get a piece of safety glazing larger than the table top. (DUH) Cut it by what ever means - it cracks easily at this phase so be very cautious. A sander is a safe but slow means to get it close.

Mask the edges and put some dry-mount on the table surface - like 3M-77. If you don't get carried away, you should get a couple of tries at getting the chart section centered and straight. When you like it, get carried away and use a fist to flatten the chart from the center until it is smooth.

Peel the masking tape and put down the cover stick tape and lay the plastic over the so edges are clear. I use a router with a ball bearing laminate edger to trim the plastic to the table edge. If you are going to use anything else, this would be a good time to put a couple of layers for duck (duct) tape along the edge to prevent damage and then trim the edge with what ever you have handy.

This can be done other ways, but the result is not much better, there is no hope of updating or changing the chart segment and all are WAY more expensive.

If you have to start with plywood, we need to add a couple of finishing steps.

Good Luck

Matt

I'm too lazy. I can buy one for $125 new, but was hoping to find a cheap used one. Seeing one in a photo recently brought back some good childhood memories...

Chris, Not sure this would work, but how about some of that two part bar and countertop surface resin poured over the table and map (map held in place as Matt suggested). That would make the Map non replaceable, but it might be OK with you that way.

This is just a thought. I have never done it.

Matt,

If I wanted one of those, I would go down in the basement and get
the one that I took out of the back of our '77 Eleganza when we
put in the bed.
There are probably a lot of them floating around that were
removed for the same reason.
