I understand several of you from Texas and other states register your coaches as antiques. I tried to when I registered my 73 but the "nice" folks at the tax office determined, after talking to the district office, that motorhomes don't qualify. Only cars, trucks and motorcycles. Does anyone from Texas have experience dealing with this?? Thanks in advance your help.

Yes. I made a copy and showed it to the clerk. It clearly says cars, trucks and motorcycles, nothing about motorhomes. I know there is a way around this, but don't know what it is. Paul

Paul,
I registered Double Trouble as an antique vehicle on 5/20/2009 at the tax
office at:
7710 Will Clayton Parkway
Humble, TX 77338-5801
As I was transferring it from an out of state registration / title (New
Jersey) I got One Trip Permit and had it:
1) inspected by a garage holding a TDOT license to do so
2) weighed at a public weighbridge (Interstate Scales)
I didn't have any problems.
The Texas Application Receipt notes:
Registration Class: Antique
Plate Type: Antique PLT
Vehicle Identification No: TZE000V000000 Vehicle Classification: PASS
Yr/Make: 1975 GMC Model: AVN Body Style: MH Unit No: Blank
Empty wt: 11100 Carrying Capacity: 0 Gross Weight: 11100
I'd take the easy way out and go to a different office.

Dan,
Or as I used to tell the younger HS Field Reps; "if you have to ask the home
office the answer is NO!"
BTW as I understand the rules for antique registration in Texas is that the
vehicle can only be driven:
1) to bring it for maintenance
2) to test it after maintenance
3) to participate in a special event
I also registered the '69 VW towd on antique plates and still use it while I
was in the Houston / Humble area as "the authorities" would have to see you
repeatedly using it to stop and ticket you.
With the GMC it's really easy, you find a rally or some kind of car event in
the general area where you want to go and if you get stopped or have an
accident that's where you were heading.
This past summer was the Vintage Car Show in Iola, WI. When that was over we
used the Greater Midwest Classics Rally in Duluth.
I made sure Helen was aware of this rule and where we were going too.

If Texas Revenue office folks are like Missouri ones, I would take Rob's
advice and go to a different one. They do their best, here, to prove you
wrong at every turn. It gives me a sick feeling every time I must go there.
If I had run my State office like they do, me and all of my employees would
have been fired.
I am going to get antique plates on the GMC but I have the paperwork so I
can mail my stuff directly to Jeff. City and bypass the local office. I
choose that route every chance I get.
I know you will get them as I always see Texas Antique Plates on coaches at
the conventions. I just figured out this year that I can do the same thing
on ours. In fact, 3 of our 4 vehicles qualify.
One of the Missouri stipulations is that "one can not drive the vehicle to
work". I do not have to worry about that one. :d

Robert, the Texas web site has some interesting comments.
It says "The vehicle may be driven to and from a location for routine maintenance." only routine?
Also can't carry advertising on it, even if it were advertising for a GMC club event.
And the vehicle must be used "exclusively" for exhibitions, club activities, parades or "other functions of public interest".
But as you say, you are always on the way to one of those functions of public interest. And when your out of state, who's checking. And good point that the spouse knows the destnation.

Don,
I agree with what you're noted below but I would be very surprised if a law
enforcement officer pulled you over just because he saw that the GMC had
antique license plates on it and wanted to make sure you were using it in
accordance with the law.
I actually had a print out of the Iola Antique Car Show at hand as well as
info on the Greater Midwest GMC Rally. I figured if I got pulled over I
could hand it to the officer and that would be that.

Paul, I have 2 GMC's registered in Texas with antique plates and never had a question about it. Go to a different office and DON'T say anything about your previous experience. Just tell them you want antique plates. Better yet get the form on line and take it with you. Check 'truck' on the form since the TZE # indicates that it was built by GM truck division.
You are not required to have a state inspection if you run antique plates. However, if you have an expired inspection sticker you can get a ticket for having an expired inspection. Word to the wise NO sticker or current sticker.

Rob,
One of out GMC Classics members returning home to Dallas from
a rally in Conroe TX was stopped because he did not have a front
license plate or an inspection sticker. Neither of these is required
in TX if you have an Antique plate. Texas only gives you one plate
if you get antique plate and state inspection is not required. Regular
plates are required to be placed on both the front and back of the
vehicle but not Antique plates. The driver explained all this to the
officer. The officer had to check with higher ups before letting him
proceed with out a ticket. Even our state highway patrol don't
know Antique law. I advise getting a copy of the requirements
and an explanation of the law if your going to travel with Antique plates.

Do you have a reference for the no inspection required with antique plate?

Don,
I looked for it today on the DMV site and couldn't find it.
I suggest calling DMV tomorrow and asking them were it is.
I will be tied up with other commitments or I would do it.
I know it is out there as I have had a copy of it before.

Hey Paul,
I've been there, done that.
I'm in Williamson County Texas. I checked into private bus and Antique plates a few months ago, in summary, go Antique.
My first try, the "nice" tax lady phoned the state (so i thought at the time) and declined my request on the same basis -not car, truck or motorcycle.
Undeterred, I took the Antique form pre-filled out to the next tax office. In true DPS fashion, the woman at the counter crushed my hopes and a very nice incredibly senior woman stepped up, said "sure no problem" and went and got me the plate.
The plates question is of course "driven for parades and shows only?"
It also includes maintenance, it's just never mentioned. I have allot of maintenance, and with our cult, we always have a meet somewhere.
