In case anybody is interested, I made more racers and they are available
now. You can get them from me, or JimK in a couple days. Price is $12 for
each racer plus $7 shipping for one, plus $1 additional shipping for any
extra racers ordered over one. I made a few 23 footers, and they would be
OK to race with the 26 footers, but if they show an advantage, they will
have to be run in their own class. I would expect the 26 footers to have
the advantage because of the longer wheel base and you can get the weight
further back. Also have a couple mistakes or extra knotty ones available
for $9, same shipping. Also have a few with extra pretty grain, small
knots, etc. for $14 in case you want to finish with a clear finish to show
up the wood grain beauty. These are made of pine rather than bass.

I am going to need one for Teri. She has been watching me work on mine. I will send you a check in a day or two.
Thanks for doing all of this. It sure made folks laugh a lot at the convention.

Well said Rob. Just ordered 4 of those balsa punch out air planes for
my neighbor's boys. Their folks are neglecting them and I need the
practice for my own Grandson when he's older. {:>)

When I get done with this one it will go display with my Matchbox coach and toads. I hope I can paint it to look right. Should have talked with Fin longer. That boy had some great looking GMCs. If we have many more than we had in Pueblo I think we need at least two nights. Some of us got tired and left before it was over.
One of our racing GMC friends has been really supporting me on this project. I hope I don't let him down.

It would really be nice to see a few photos of some completed racers. I have
two coming for my daughters and might need a bit of inspiration to get them
going on a paint scheme. My daughters have been hooked on the GMC ever since
it arrived home. The racers are just one of my ways of keeping their spirits
up!

Ken,

Funny you should bring this up; I told Ray I was going to send him some
Aussie wood to make one for me.

I am going to get a hunk of coolibah to make it from.

WALTZING MATILDA

Once a jolly swagman
Camped by a billabong,
Under the shade
Of a coolibah tree.
And he sang as he watched
And waited 'till his billy boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing
Matilda with me."

More Aussie Lingo training:

SWAGMAN: a man who is living rough travelling on the road, who carried his
swag in depression times (1920s).

BILLABONG: a river backwash, or waterhole

COOLIBAH TREE: a spreading eucaliptus tree

BILLY: a pot/tin for boiling water

MATILDA: a "swag" or "roll" of blankets that a swagman carries

No right hand drives racing in the USA derbies. If it is not in our rules we will see that it gets in there before Montgomery. Laughing

Rob,

I suggest making them out of Jarrah tree. You can get all you want in Manjimup, SW. Most beautiful wood I have ever seen. Be sure to use clear varnish. Makes mahogany look bad!

Just a hint regarding speed.

If you are going for "looks", any wood would be fine. However, it is fairly
clear that the more weight you can concentrate at the back end of the
racers, the faster they go.

The lighter the wood you use to start with, the easier it is to weight the
back end. Even among the pine kits we started with, there was a significant
difference among them.

The lightest of those kits ended up our fastest racer, by adding lead
weights to the rear from one of the many Pinewood Derby web-sites.

Dan ... "false information" ???

I thought I told and showed everyone what I did to make mine pretty fast.
Basically, I removed as much weight as possible from the front, added lead
weight in the back to hit the one-pound mark, raised the center wheels so
they don't touch, and then use lots of graphite).

However .... still not as fast as JimK's.

Fin.

Dang it Fin, you did it again. How can we win if you let everyone know? Laughing
Seriously, yall had 4 of the neatest looking coaches. The one with a/c and lights was very nice but slow. Too much drag on the roof.
Hope you can plan to be in Montgomery.
I just picked up 4 new 6 volts. Trying to get ready for Quartzsite. Why don't yall come out?

Fin,
4 new 6 volt house batteries. We should be able to hang out 2-3 weeks in Quartzsite without running the generator. We do carry a little 1 kw Kipor in case of a couple cloudy days.
Give it serious thought, Quartzsite. We have a blast out there. Lots of GMC s and lots of nicely converted busses. Teri and I also spend a week with a bunch of ham radio operators. We spend time with 49ers and actually "circle the waggons". Email me if you need more encouragement.
Dan
