Here are some of the time honored ways to Jack up the GMC , safely and easly
http://gmcmotorhome.info/rear.html#RAISING

In here are blocks and ramps that will safely and easily, let you work under
your GMC.

If you are going under the GMC, you should expect an air bag or torson bar
to fail at any time, and the GMC will go lower than a snake's belly when
this happens. Rember the GMC weights 13,000 pounds so jack stands and jacks
are always risky business.

I use jack stands also, but I am sure they would pop out if there was a
mechanical failure on the GMC. So to be safe, I always block the bogies,
raise the GMC on ramps, use jack stands and jack hooks (all) when I am under
the GMC.

To change a wheel, the jack hook and plate, (shown above and in the GMC
maint. manual), with releasing the air bag on that side (as described by
KenB) will unload the wheel so it can easily be removed with out raising the
whole GMC. There are jack hooks that will work on the front and the rear,
to lift the GMC just enough to remove a wheel, or protect from mechanical
failures.

Jawohl!

Aussie slang lesson for the day:

Also, when changing a tire or jacking up your rig to work under it. The
first thing you should do is slide the extra wheel (either the spare or the
one you just removed) under the frame near where you are working. This could
save your life or a great deal of work if something lets go. This is a
trick my mechanic friend showed me when I first got my coach. I think a damaged
wheel (if it gets damaged at all) is a fair trade off for your life or a
limb.

My father always did this, using the tire and wheel as the emergency blocking he had handy, as opposed to the blocking that he had at home and didn't carry in the 9 passenger station wagon that was chock full of kids. I suspect it would indeed save your life and quite probably a lot of work. This was in the era of bias ply tires that often let go on secondary roads, in the middle of the night, in (Michigan) rain. Using the racheting bumper jack was always a dicey business on a sloping gravel shoulder; nothing like having a nice shop jack at home on a level concrete floor.
