"Back in the day" I was interested in both. My dad like the FMC name because
he had had dealings with the company. I preferred GMC because of the whole
design concept.
What's funny is that two months before finally being big enough to get my
own (2007) I came close to buying an FMC. I wanted to replace the Dodge
engine with a Cummins diesel. When we looked inside the decision was easy
for me -- the design of the GMC, no matter who the upfitter was, stood out.
The rest is history.
BTW, I remember when I first saw this article "back in the day".

I'm with Rob M, THE BD-5
I remember both the GMC and the FMC when they came out.
The only difference was front or rear drive basically, all else may be the same other than storage, or lack there of in the GMC.
Today, we know the weakness of the GMC and I have never cared for Ford products anyway.
I think they both look good, certainly the windshield has to be cheaper on the FMC when compared to the GMC's panoramic glass.
I've always liked the GMC, from the day I saw the brochures and watched they travel down the road. Always caught my eye..I was snagged.
Can't say that I've seen any FMC's on the road since I bought Gatsbys' CRUISER , Maybe that is a sign.

It amazing, the "stuff" companies went to great expense to produce. One thing that I very much appreciate about the GMC design is the windows. GMCs are almost all window. These new, giant boxes, that are being pumped out, on top of being giant boxes, have no windows. Little tiny square windows, further diminished by the sheer size of the rig.
I also notice that, even in the day, the FMC claimed to be lower because it was a pusher. The big box rigs need a flight of steps to get to the main floor. So much for no drive shaft allowing the coach to be lower. (Of course we don't have a "basement" for extra junk.)

I can't see it for some reason.
Either something happened to my ability to read PDF's or some of the links have gone bad.

____________________________________________________________
Well you have to admit, that even though we GMC owners have a very good looking coach, we have some storage issues.
The Large coaches that you need a catwalk to get into are able to have storage under the floor, and it made the frame a bit simpler too.
The GMC has a lot of give and take in its design, on top of the fact that they wanted to use "on the shelf" parts to build her.
She was a break thru design and certainly turned some heads when she hit the road.
I am constantly trying to find a way to make up for the lost storage, but am always enjoying her good looks. HA!
I am fairly certain, she will continue to keep the looks up as long as we are able to get parts and keep her running.
I know there are those that think her value is gonna jump sky high but I don't think it will if you consider fuel costs, scarce fuel fields, lack of parts, scarcity of mechanics that will/can work on them. The value will hold for a while but I don't see it going up.
Still, This lady is special and certainly represents the RV market in a very good light.
THE FMC was probably a good unit, but there is something special about the GMC.

""Well you have to admit, that even though we GMC owners have a very good looking coach, we have some storage issues""
I agree Larry. In my case it's particularly deficient for outdoor stuff--things like BBQ's, chairs, firewood, etc. Inside I do OK, but even that is marginal. Although the GMC was pretty advanced, there's still a lot of wasted space almost everywhere. When you look at European coaches and trailers, every square inch is used effectively. I guess it's part of their environment.

It appears as though the left side air bag has a leak. I like the road test: 0-60 in 30 seconds flat. Then they had both (as in 2) air bags blow during the road test part, and they drove it home with the tail dragging. Riding on the shock absorbers? They said the airbags didn't have enough clearance to the tires. Never heard that one before.

I did like the FMC's when I was a kid, but now? You might as well buy a Kaiser Frazier. It would be a fun platform to geek out with a nice diesel engine, etc, but you would be totally on your own. This list and our vendors add so much value to the GMC, it's incalculable. Like Jim B says - The dream's alive...

I "discovered" the GMC about ten years ago. Did some Internet research then and decided I wanted one. Two years ago I finally was able to buy one.
About six months after I bought the GMC, I learned of the FMC and that a company called "Motor Coach Restoration" was only 27 miles from my house. From what I can tell "Motor Coach Restoration" is to the FMC world what the "Jim's" are to the GMC world.
While I do sometimes wish I was closer to Orlando or Fremont, I still do not regret buying the GMC.
My GMC needs to be painted, and needs some body work. It still looks so much better than any of the FMCs I see when I drive past that FMC place!

I pulled up aq few posts on this thread and noticed the interest in those other machines. One of the things that interested me with the GMC was how unique it was, there were other very unique coaches as well. I have worked on several FMC coaches -- before I jumped ship I was into Chrysler stuff and when I saw an FMC sporting a 413 "sidewinder" rear engine I really thought they were trick. There were other cool ones but in the end it's all down to the community support and parts availability and thats where the GMC shines.
Not only the fact that there were enough made to keep the numbers up even with attrition, GM got the community together with their club sponsors, rallies and all of that. We all benifit from that legacy.
The big bucks put into engineering didn't hurt either, they can be taken apart and put back together. I have done Airstream coaches among others and by far the GMC is an easier restoration because of the way it was built.
Hey but everyone knows all of this here but another huge plus is the style of the coach has kept it fresh looking and still in the eye of the consumer. The other vintage machines all have some feature that says "I am old" but a GMC does not say that. We can make a GMC look newer than any new coach out there-- that to me is what drives our work and the future of the GMC. I have to say to all of you who have a GMC that you have backed the right horse. The FMC is a cool machine and I turn my head when one passes, an Airstream, Revcom, Discovery, Ultravan and all the others makes me look too but I guaranty no GMC will pass me on the highway without slow down and check it out!
You're right, go out there and give your GMC a hug and think yourself lucky that you have one for your very own.

The FMC still isn't a big box. It does have a smaller community but they are
active and I've seen some nice coaches that have been reworked. As to the
ugly ones, well, we have them, too.
What was nice, in addition to the pusher concept and "lower" floor, was the
independent suspension. Radical at the time. Still is. And axle that goes
all the way across is an axle that goes all the way across with all the
rights and privileges thereunto appertaining.
