I was all set to put in some engine side vents, but was surprised
to find that in our 1973, 23' coach, the raised cockpit floor ends immediately
behind the front wheel wells. That is, the usual placement of the
vents behind the front wheels back by the seam won't work -- if I cut holes
there, it'd be into the living area.

Has anyone put side engine vents on an early 23' coach? If so, did you cut
holes above the wheel wells? How well did they work and hold up?

thanks,
Karen

Both 23' and 26' coaches are the same. The top step is in front of the
body seam. Vents either have to be located in front of the top step
riser or below the top step. Most that I've seen are the former.

And, yes, many pictures I've seen of those vents probably open into
the aluminum panel that covers that area right behind the wall
materials (seen at far lower left in the following picture).

That riser is actually forward of the bottom edge of the wheel
opening, as shown on this drawing:

But the bigger question is: Why do you need the vents? Don't mess with
that until you have addressed all other cooling issues, and then you
may find you don't need to cut holes in the body at all.

If you like the look, the stainless vents that JimK sells fit nicely and he has the instructions included (I think they may be on his website as well).

His price on them is better than West Marine's price BTW. I used to have the Ragusa vents on my coach, but switched to JimK's as I like the look better. The heat really does pour out of them (at least when I walk next to the idling coach), so I don't see how they can hurt anything. I always liked the look of the vents as much as the function.

I found it easiest to use a cutoff wheel to mount them, as the step behind the rear half of the vent precludes you from easily using a scroll saw. The SMC fiberglass cuts like butter (though with a lot more dust).

G'day,

I personally don't care for the stainless steel look so I'm going to order a
pair of cheap plastic (paintable) ones from West Marine.

Yup, those are exactly the ones I bought. I planned to paint them body color.
I happened to be in West Marine, saw them, and couldn't resist. Hard to beat at $8.49 each.
Except for being white, they look just like some of the stainless ones that WM sells
and are the same size. They're pretty rigid. If you have any trouble getting them,
let me know. I'm not sure if I'll use these.

Got the West Marine vents but the flange was too big and it was one vent too much. cut the vent down including trimming off the flange and screwholes.....now it's 4 vents and looks right.

One problem...The vent is so rigid now that it want's to pop out.Hopefully RTV will hold it.
