Just for Dan to think about . . .
Many years ago, we used to frequent an ORV playground.
I fellow would show up with a VW based dune buggy - Meyer's Towd IIRC - on the hitch of a mid-sized car. The front wheels would be off the ground when towing. The tongue was about 4 feet out of the front, and he was able to lift it off the hitch ball - alone. You could tell it wasn't light, but probably only around 200# out there.
The tow bar was a piece of 2x4 steel box tubing with a hook at the back and spreader with 2 saddles at the front. The hook in the back probably engaged that rear transmission cross-member (again, I am working from old memories here). The two front saddles for the lower front suspension tube were a lot taller to the rear - probably to support the towing load. There was something that held it in place, because one time he took it down and the bar didn't come down as he hoped. He used some very specialized vocabulary and then undid some sort of an over-center latch that allowed the front of the bar to come down. Then he just pulled the bar forward a few inches and it fell loose in the rear.
I know he effectively back with it because he did so a couple of times to get clear after hooking up. Well, it was a long 2 wheel trailer at that point.
I won't burn a lot more band width than this, but is was an interesting idea that might not work with as much metal as Dan has.
