Hello Netters
Steve and Nancy put on a wonderful meet.
Thanks you guys.
Good friends, fellowship, weather and food
Round trip to Benson AZ our GMC ran like a scaled cat 3100 rpm = about 65 mph at 10 mpg.
About 900 miles plus round trip.
Some cross wind coming back this afternoon.
Not bad for a 35 year old GMC motor home.

Anyone who knows Howard knows he is a no "BS" kind of guy. He had his
engine built in WA a few years ago when he blew it on a trip. He is
using the "Kryptonite" cam that Jim B., Arch, Dave Mumert etc came up
with. Most of that trip from San Diego to Benson, AZ., is across
pretty nice, flat desert and the temps were just about perfect for no
AC driving. Howard is also one of the 'hot rod" guys here on the net
and has some pretty darn good tune up skills.

Dan;
Yes we run Jim K's 3:70, with Howell F I, Jim B first cam, roller rockers
with new push rods, Dicks distributer, balanced engine, tuned at the Dyno
Shop in Santee Ca.
All of this = one fine running engine.
We have run this set up for the past five years.
3100 rpm is the sweet spot for this engine.
We try to keep the tack-vac gauge in the green and the rpm at 3,000-3,100.
We also have the dyno run for this engine.
This is not our first 455 Olds.
Ran one for twenty years in our 18' jet boat and kicked some booty with it
on the lower Colorado River.

Howard,
How would you describe the engine related noises with the 3.70 gears? Is
there a significant increase of noise over the stock 3.07s? The clutch fan
must roar when it engages at highway speeds?

Les;
The noise is about the same.
No much of a roar from the fan.
The temp never goes over 190 unless we are pulling a long grade and then
only for a short time the temp will come up to around 200 - 220 and then
drop back to 190.
The roar is a good sign things are working.
Then only when the out side temp. at 100 plus..
We also run the aluminum radiator and have for the past three years.
Love that radiator.
I will also will not get in to the coolant mix we run.
I have had my butt kicked on GMCnet for that.
Some folks are just smarter then me!
I guess?
Thanks
