By the way, does anyone have an extra head bolt? I thought it would be a simple thing, but it apparently is not readily available. 3 inches long with a 3/4 inch stud on top. Stud not entirely necessary as there is nothing attached to it.

the stud on top is supposed to take a bracket to the rear of the alternator. it keeps the alt. from twisting. the twist throws the pulley out of alignment and can cause wear to the belt.
my coach didn't have the bracket and i was loosing alt. belts like crazy.

Yup, mine has that too - on the other side. That bracket looks like a redundant bracket, but it's not. I've only got one belt driving that big alternator and I've wondered if it wouldn't be easy to convert to a dual belt. Very difficult to keep it tight enough.

it's easy to convert. just buy a dual pulley with or without key way slot. it just fits on the shaft and the nut holds it in place. they are available at Autozone or from GMC suppliers. i did it to my coach and i haven't had any problem since. it also eliminates the power steering belt and makes belt changing easier if you ever have to do it again.
