This past summer my trans died and I called Good Sam for a tow. I told them the closest guy I was comfortable with was Ken Frey, 90 miles away. They told me they would only tow it to the nearest shop THEY determined to be capable. The guy the chose was a mile away, operated out of a converted gas station and didn't have the best reputation. He had no familiarity with the GMC, to him it was just another motorhome. Sam said "sorry" it's him or no one. I paid big time to have it towed to Frey's shop.

I got a call today from a GSC representative who said if they'd towed it to the local shop and the local shop couldn't handle it then they's tow it to someone else, not necessarily Frey, someone next on their list.

Anyone familiar with the way AAA would have handled this? I can't see any reason to continue with GSC.

Glenn-- you've just nailed my huge problem with Good Sam. AAA will tow you 100 miles before you have to start paying. That's it. 100 miles travelled is what they tell you, it's what you get. Good Sam will ONLY tow to the nearest "approved" service station for how they classify your motorhome. I had this problem earlier this year. My preference was to go 26 miles to a guy I trusted, they would only tow me 22 miles to their provider. I payed the extra $4/mile to go 4 more miles. Good Sam may tow you farther, but odds are you aren't going where you want to go. AAA will tow you 100 miles. It may not get you where you going, but at least you are heading where you want to be.

The other thing a AAA tow driver once told me was that they will tow you 100 miles. If you call back the next day, they will probably tow you another 100 miles if you manage to move a few hundred yards and tell them the problem resurfaced. I can't attest to a) this working or b) this being particularly ethical, but it's just an idea the tow jockey once gave me

They tried to do the same with me. I paid for the tow and filed a
complaint. They paid everything but the toll over the Narrows bridge.
I told them that if that $35 was so important then I would cancel. Now
I have AAA and they have been good to me. Only draw back is that I am
limited to 4 tows per year. $150 per year and considering how many
GMCs I move hither and yon towing insurance is important to
me...........Terry

How expensive is that AAA towing and can it be upgraded too 200 miles? A friend of mine broke an axle on his street rod a few months ago and they towed him the 200 from Cal into Nevada then charged for the remaining 10 miles to his house.
When I spun a bearing in my GMC last year I had Poliseek Insurance and they wanted to tow me to a small garage in Walker Ca as I was just over the state line. I told them I had to get towed to Nevada even if I nursed her back over the state line. They would only tow to an approved repair facility unless I payed a $300 custom tow fee. That shop was 20 miles into Nevada. When the giant tow truck showed up from Carson city I asked the driver to drop me off on the side of the road near my house (30 miles into Nevada) on his way back to Carson City. Nice guy he dropped me off at my house. I gave him a nice tip.

Check with your insurance company. Several years ago - I think
it was 2004 - State Farm paid($1900.00) for towing the PB from
Charlotte, NC to our house in Newark, Ohio. The current price
for their towing coverage is all of $7.20 per year. And, they
just paid for replacing the awning that was destroyed by the wind
in Kansas on our way to Pueblo.

Four years ago I purchased a Transmode from the local Government Surplus outfit in Pensacola. I had flown down to pick it up and with the help of John Richardson and Pete Marchiando, got the beasty running after draining both fuel tanks of water - almost full, mind you - filled up with $1.50/gallon regular (expensive at the time) and took off for the Co-Op in Orlando.

It sounded funny but we couldn't figure it out; we did check the RF bearing but not the left. About 20 miles into the trip the LF bearing blew out the CV joint and my amazing GS experience unfolded.

The short version is that between my insistence that they take the coach to a qualified, parts-stocking service garage and Jim Bound's expert advice to customer service, I got a local tow that evening, a stay in a crowded hotel full of Katrina refugees from AL & LA and the next morning we loaded the Transmode onto a Land-All lowboy trailer and drove it all the way to Orlando. The LF knuckle collapsed coming off the trailer when I hit the brakes.

GS paid the entire tow bill - over $2300 as I recall with nary a protest. When I put the stretch back on the road I'll definitely use them another shot.

My experience with Good Sam when I lost my RH rear wheel was like yours. They would tow me 18 miles to a "repair shop" that said they could fix it. I paid $150 to get it towed 50 miles to Tom Hampton's place in Marysville OH. My State Farm paid the $150.

I'm very disappointed with my first, and likely last, experience with Good Sam. I'm going to check into the options of my AAA and State Farm and make a more informed purchase when it's time to re-up.

No one mentioned Progressive?

I had them fix a flat the day I drove the MH home (the day after I bough coverage) thought the service was pretty good.

While we're on this topic, what's the consensus?
