[GMCnet] Replacement Furnace for Sol Aire? [message #63510] |

Based on recommendations of you folks, I removed the Sol Aire furnace. So
the question is now, what do I replace it with. I saw Suburban SF-30 in the
FAQ but I am wondering if anybody has found one that does not require me
cutting new holes for the exhaust and intake vents. Does such a beast
exist?
Thanks,

Any experiences with Atwood? I am looking at an Atwood Excalibur XT. You
have to cut a large hole and the furnace goes in from the outside. Youthen
get a cove/access door that covers the hole. I know there would be another
cover outside but I could paint it and I like the idea of being able to
easily access all the furnace inerds.

I have the Atwood and it works great. You can get a flush mount kit that
looks much better than the surface mount in my opinion. I also have a
Powerpoint presentation of the installation which I presented at an ES rally
a couple years ago if you want me to email it to you. I built a "wedge"
between the outside panel and the furnace mounting face so the furnace could
be installed horizontally rather than at the angle of the panel, and sit
right on the floor so it didn't take much room. As a bonus, got a nice
shelf with the extra room after taking out the Sol-Aire to keep a case and a
half of beer under the kitchen sink if I get to it before Carol does{:>)
Sometimes you can find these with a dent or other cosmetic damage at the
surplus stores in the Elkhart area.

Ray,
I would like a copy of that presentation as well. My Solaire is destined for
the scrap pile and I need to consider a replacement due to our northern
climate.

I would love to see what you did. so if you could send me the presentation
and anything you would like to share, I would greatly appreciate it. Email,
the list, or a link would be great.
This project is moving forward. I think I will be putting it in soon.
Thanks.

What brand of grease seals are preferred on the front hubs?
I recall reading somewhere that there are significant differences between
the brands, but no comment was made as to which one worked best.
