Most have something along the lines of: "Easy no-drill installation using 3M tape." Makes me wonder how many are functional vents. (They most likely could be modified into functional vents.) Some look like they are designed to be right and left but they only sell one -- not a pair. How do you get a mirror image one for the other side? One says "6 pieces".... for like $13. Things that make you say hummm.
But after saying all that.... there ARE some interesting designs.

[GMCnet] Good places to live in the Pacific NW and GMC [message #63192 is a reply to message #63189] |

Hello list,
My wife and I are normally from Salt Lake City but we relocated to Ann
Arbor for some advanced dental training (for her). She's going to
start practicing again afterw she finishes this coming May of 2010.
We're considering moving somewhere other than SLC for several reasons
(pollution, too big, too hot, lots of snow, etc). I work for the VA
(darned socialized medicine ;-), and spend more time developing the
VA's electronic health records software than practicing. Plus VA has
clinical facilities everywhere so moving is feasible for me.
While I grew up in Michigan and went to school here, we've become
westernites by nature. So the question(s): Does anyone living in the
Pacific NW have any suggestions about cities and areas that are nice
for young girls (6, 4, 6 months) needing good schools, preferably
affordable cost of living, preferably interesting older houses rather
than new subdivisions, scenic with national parks, nearby skiing,
nearby sailplane airport/glider club, and with a good GMC club and
support shops? Population of ca. 100k or less but maybe near a bigger
city is a plus. What do you know and like about those places? What
do you dislike?
Please feel free to reply off-list so as not to clog the GMC net (mlincoln1@gmail.com
), as only part of this question is GMC-related.

I couldn't get the link to produce anything except racing helmets. A search for engine vent was no joy, too.

While it worked for me a while ago... I also get helmets. As the link is NOT consistant, use the link then look up "Fender Vents" under Universal Accessory
"Accessory> Fender Vents> Universal"

Gene,
I have a Stainless steel vent unit that really fits well and more than that, there are instructions as to where to cut the hole. There is an inner liner (plastic) we all know about and also an inner wall that effects placement of the side engine vent. More than just the cost of the vent is how to install it and where to NOT cut. I think we sell them for $18 a vent. They look tasteful, not too big or too small, look good and come with the mounting screws in stainless steel like the vent.
Give me a call if you are interested. Like I said, more than the vent are the instructions on how to install

Jim,
I have a set of your vents on my '73. But sometimes, no matter how good a product you already have (or can get) you want something different. That said, I am not ready to buy any of the vents on that web site.
Gene,
Some of the vents WOULD look OK if flipped over... others only look right one way and NEED a left/right to be installed.

However removing the fender liners can allow water and mud and road grime to splash against the engine.
I have an album on the GMC photos site showing height I installed a louvered vent in the side of the wheel well liner. I’m not at home right now but if anyone wants the link let me know.

Keith,
I don't know where you live but all the travels that I do year round with
rain slush, snow and mud you get all sorts of stuff splashed on your engine
and engine compartment with no wheel wells to protect it. BAD choice to
remove them! I agree with Emery.

On the other hand, our GMC, with the inner 1/2 of the wheel well liners
removed, has been from Key West, FL to Fairbanks, AK with no noticeable
pollution of the engine -- and VERY stable temperature control (aided,
probably by the complete grill-to-radiator ducting).
I admittedly don't go on dirt roads very often, and NEVER (hopefully in
this lifetime) go anywhere snow/ice/slush covered! :-)

Iirc the fender liners also function to create a draft through the engine
bay to help control excessive heat buildup in the doghouse. Read it here so
it must be true. Sure is a heck of a lot easier to work on without them
however.
