Tom Hampton has had a chance to take a look at the aftermath of my lost wheel and he thinks that there was bearing failure due to excessive heat from a dragging brake turning the grease to a liquid. I remember that the brake shoes picked up along the road by a good Samaritan were completely covered in black grease which seems to confirm Tom's analysis.

My coach has the carbon metallic brake shoes. I wonder if these contributed even more heat than would have been possible with "standard" brakes.

The outer inner bearing race was seized to the hub. Tom was able to knock it loose but there was indication that the bearing had spun.

Looks like I'm going to need everything from the bogey out including the backing plate and the axle. At least my wheel and tire survived.
