Tom Hampton has had a chance to take a look at the aftermath of my lost wheel and he thinks that there was bearing failure due to excessive heat from a dragging brake turning the grease to a liquid. I remember that the brake shoes picked up along the road by a good Samaritan were completely covered in black grease which seems to confirm Tom's analysis.

My coach has the carbon metallic brake shoes. I wonder if these contributed even more heat than would have been possible with "standard" brakes.

The outer inner bearing race was seized to the hub. Tom was able to knock it loose but there was indication that the bearing had spun.

Looks like I'm going to need everything from the bogey out including the backing plate and the axle. At least my wheel and tire survived.

Bill,
It is usually the other way around. Bearing goes bad, seal goes away
from the heat, grease gets on everything and then comes the inevitable
separation from the coach. You can really hear those rear wheel
bearings when they start going bad. WAAaaaWAAaaaaaWAAAaaaaaa, you get
the idea. Sometimes, when it happens over a long period of time, you
start thinking that the noise is normal. I've had a couple go like
that but caught it before the really bad part happened.

That is exactly how our's sounded Steve, on the way to Dothan. Teri made me stop and get it fixed. Funny thing is that Bill never heard that noise. What does that say? I know he is not deaf.

Bill-
I have a set of used backing plates for standard drum brakes that you
may have. I'll check to see if I can determine a left from a right and
if I can't, I'll just ship both of them. Should I ship to Tom or to you?
Just let me know-
