I put them on my coach 7-8 years ago and the naysayers predicted doom for
the bearings. My front end was in good shape, my tires were 'trued' and I
still had problems with truck ruts. The spacers took the ruts out of the
picture.

After 25k miles I took the coach into Sirums to have the bearings
replaced (which I did) but he mic'd them and they were still within
tolerances.

Your experience may be different but frankly I wouldn't worry about it as
long as they are serviced per the schedule.

Thanks Dave.
One question - what exactly is the schedule for front wheel brg service?
I've read posts about lubing the brgs on the coach but couldn't find a good pictorial of the process.

G'day,

The GMC Maintenance Manual X-7725 / 1977 & 1978 Supplement / Page 0-2 calls
for servicing the bearings every 24,000 miles.

While the above manual shows how to remove the disc and hub from the knuckle
on the vehicle (Page 3A-9 to 3A-12) most owners choose to remove the disk,
hub, and knuckle from the vehicle as an assembly and do it on a work bench.

However, there are two was to lubricate the bearings on the coach easily:

1) If your coach has grease nipples in the knuckles as pictured below.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=5991

2) You have one of the new tools designed by Chuck Aulgur and sold by Jim
Kanomata of Applied GMC.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=30579

PLEASE pay particular attention to the very last sentence in the Photo
Details! To put it another way, you need to remove the bearings, clean and
inspect them to make sure they are OK and once you do that it is OK to use
the tool or grease nipple.

It is not uncommon to damage the hub or knuckle beyond repair if the
bearings fail.

Right on Jim!
My 1st, fresh from the factory in 75 was the same. The tires (Nylon?)
also 'thumped' for the 1st
mile or two but I don't recall experiencing truck ruts. Of course the
Interstate highways were 35 years younger then and the semis weren't
quite so big (heavy)

Several have answered this for me but here is the GM maintenance schedule

for 75 coaches http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7522A.pdf and for the 78
coach
which you have http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7722B.pdf

Note that front wheel bearing service interval is not mentioned; only the
rears. I seem to
recall from somewhere that front bearings were to be serviced at 25k
which is what I did.
For me that was every 3 to 4 years.

There is a new front bearing greaser that Jim is selling that is not in the catalog yet. You will have to call and talk with him about it.

Mark,

Jim just got ten of them in from Chuck Aulgur and they're not on his website
yet. Give him a call (1-800-752-7502) and you can order one.

By the way I know he only has nine of them left (I bought one)! They'll
probably go quickly so you better call him FAST!

Mark,

This may sound stupid but I don't know how much the tool itself was. When I
gave Mary Jane my credit card she gave me the bottom line which was $94
which included shipment to Australia.

Dang, that is a bargain. If I did not have the alamites already I would be all over that. I got to look it over good before Rob ran off with it. Nice setup. Will make for a lot less work on those front bearings after they are initially packed good.

Jim,

That's easy just have them made by Ornamentals! ;-)

Only problem is you'll probably have to buy a 20 container full of them!

We purchase Aluminum extrusions for our filter housing in quantities
enough to order from overseas, but I will keep the business in
California and put up with the high prices.
We do not do as well, but as long as I can have rice for dinner, I will survive.

We are now going to be selling the Limited Slip Final drive units.
We have been running them for the last 2 weeks with no steering or traction problems.
We will be doing a swap for those with the 3.55/3.70 only till first of the year, then 3.42.
Were going to carry a 2 year 24,000 mile warrenty on parts and labor. Again, no one does both.
We are excited that we can make it available to the Community.
