Hello everyone,

I know this subject has been discussed before so I hope no one minds me bringing this up again. Note that I tried searching previous posts but have had no luck.

Okay, if you recall a few weeks ago I posted a topic about a problem I had with the RH front brake overheat. This was due to the caliper not fully releasing, most likely caused by the old deteriorated brake line. My main concern was with the wheel bearings and if they were adversely effected by the over temp. Since then I have change the caliper and replaced the brake line with a SS line from JimK. I am going to make another post later showing what I found with the bearing grease.

Anyway, when I got everything back together and torqued the front axle nut I could only torque it to 140 lbs ft and still be able to install the cotter key. Any more then 140 lbs the cotter key hole will not line up with the nut. Even at 250lbs (max on my TQ wrench) the cotter key hole is still covered. Per the MM the torque range is 140 to 280 lbs ft. So I am with in limits.

Any thoughts/comments on leaving the axle nut at 140 lbs ft of torque. It is within the limits. I could add a washer thus allowing more torque to be applied. Any thoughts about adding a washer?

I bought the GMC DVD series with all the manuals and videos. I was
watching some random factory service videos last night, whiling away
time while waiting for the sisterly fighting sounds from my girls'
room to diminish. I happened to watch the factory video of the front
axle torque procedure, and it was just as described in the link below
(except in more detail). If you can get to 140 ft-lbs and fit the
cotter, you're good to go. If you go past the cotter pin hole and
you're not yet at 140 ft-lbs, you must continue to tighten until you
can fit the cotter pin, not to exceed 280 ft-lbs.

John,
There are 2 holes on the axle to insert pin. This will help you to get
you in that torque rang. We prefer 200+

Thanks all for the input.

Jim I will check the axle, never realized they had two holes. Then again I never looked! I would feel more comfortable with a higher torque like you mentioned.
