I've heard vague reference to putting vents into
the wheel wells in front instead of putting holes
in the sides. Does this work?? Any pictures
or diagrams of the location? The "Wheel Well Vents"
link on gmcmotorhome.info is broken. I haven't
been able to find other reference to it.

I cut about 5 holes with a 1 3/4 - 2" hole saw near the upper rear/inside corner. No shielding of the holes is necessary, I believe positive pressure from the engine side keeps "splash" out. I the 20 years I have used this I have no signs of any buildup.

Coincidently, I'm running around the village today looking in automotive
jobbers for sheets of aluminum louvers to scab into my inner fender
wells to let the heat out that the GM accountants never considered. I
ran into the local sewer surgeon and he informed me that Home Depot has
aluminum louvers @ 10" X 14" for venting crawl spaces.

It is the 8005. The plumber found it in our local "Plastic Shop", not
Home Depot as I thought. I found this as a source;

I will just stay home and read the net while saving money and travel
time. Did you cut the holes on he vertical surface, the horizontal
surface, or both? And as always is there a picture of your modification?

I'm puzzled by your request for remote dipstick for the engine oil because
as far as I knew GMC located them under the passenger side hood from the
factory. Hmmm, well at least on my two Avions that's where it is.
Double Trouble has a remote trans dipstick in the same place. I believe it
was made by Ken Frey back a number of years ago. Unfortunately he has
stopped making them.
I did find them on Gateway Motor Homes:

At $119.00 they ain't cheap!

Since my engine has been overhauled or replaced prior to my ownership, the
dipstick may have been replaced. I don't like having to open the hatch to
check fluids. I like it even less when the engine is hot!

Les,
Rob's correct, your GMC should have been equipped with an under-hood
engine oil dipstick. Not that the fact is of any help to you if you
don't have one now. :-(
Fabricating either of those is a pretty simple project; they're merely
3/8" steel fuel tubing with an appropriate dipstick. The stick can be
made from 1/8" steel cable which will negotiate the compound curves in
the tube more easily than a flat one.
The OEM engine tube was made in two pieces with a brass coupling at
their junction at 1/2 its length; that was probably for production line
convenience and is the easiest way to make and install your own. One
can start with a prefabricated lower tube (your existing one if in good
shape) and add only the upper tube, using a common 3/8" compression
fitting (one with ferrules) -- just drill the center of the coupling to
the ID of the tubing if it's smaller. The upper tube will need to be
secured to the radiator support. Bend the two tubes toward the front
location with as few and gentle curves as feasible. If you need to make
a lower tube, the necessary depth-setting bulge can be replaced with a
ferrule: drill out a brass compression fitting so it will slide over
the tube to the desired location, set the ferrule, then remove the body
and cap of the fitting, leaving the ferrule in place.
The transmission dipstick tube is only slightly more difficult to
build: Examine the OEM tube and you'll see that there's a "knee" in it
facing toward the front of the engine; a 3/8" tube brazed into the top
of that knee will allow the new dipstick to run straight down into the
transmission -- even with the OEM dipstick in place. Remove the one
bolt holding the OEM tube into the transmission and pull it straight out
(save the O-ring in case you can't find a new one). Drill straight into
the old tube at your chosen location, then insert a 3/8" rod (long
bolt?) and move it to the orientation you want for the new tube, bending
the metal into an oval. Now braze in a short piece (18"?) of 3/8"
tubing, with the end tapered to sort of match the inside of the old
tube. Use a brass coupling, as for the engine oil tube, to extend the
short tube to the area under the hood.
The dipsticks can be made from ordinary 1/8" steel cable. You can
estimate the length with a tape measure. Cut that length and braze the
ends to prevent unraveling and to make reading easier; the lower end can
be flattened slightly with a hammer. With the oil level known (just
after an engine oil change, or removing the transmission's vacuum
modulator), insert the dipstick and mark the oil level with a file mark
on the brazed area. Position the upper mark by reference to the OEM
dipstick. I made my handles from 1/2" Lexan; Cut a rectangular handle
about 2 -- 2-1/2" X 1-1/4". Drill a 1/8" hole through the 1-1/4"
dimension at the center of the longer dimension for the cable to pass
through. Enlarge the hole to 3/8"+ for about 1/2" deep to fit over the
tube. Drill an approriately sized hole from one end of the handle to
the 1/8" cable and install a socket head set screw to secure the cable
at the calibrated length. It's best to tap the set screw hole, but the
Lexan will deform to fit the screw threads if the hole is slightly
oversize. Adjust the cable to the exact length desired, lock it there
with the set screw, and cut off the excess cable above the handle. Mark
the handles with Brother TZ label tape, paint, or whatever. Done.

As I understand it, the wheel wells are there for 2 reasons:
1. to stop splash from the wheels from reaching the engine compartment. Cold water hitting the stupid hot cast exh. manifolds is bad juju and will caise them to crack
2. to direct the heat in the engine compartment down and out under the coach and off of the back wall. It does this by bending the hot air down the back of the wheel well and out the slotted area down under the floor.
I think putting holes in the sides of the wheel liners will, yes let the heat out a bit better but would also maybe allow water spash into the engine compartment negating an important feature of the liner. I prefer to say installing body side engine vents above the liners will allow the heat out before the liner tries to bend it down which will allow more heat out-- I mean it allows the heat out before it has to bend down this lets it out easier and better. I don;t think it is a "must have" thing because I think the liner does it's job well-- that is unless you block off the path of the air over the liner with an insulation sheet or something.
I do sell a short engine vent for this job. If you look into the area thats available for evac of the heat, it is only a small opening, there is an inner wall that makes a big vent kinda useless. If you like the way they look hey, thats a good reason to do something but if you are talking about usefull evac of hot air, the smaller vent works well.
