G'day,

As noted in a previous message I intend to use Mobil 1 15W-50 in Double
Trouble. Unfortunately I decided to do so AFTER I had purchased two five
quart bottles of Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 (Blue Bottle). I will try and
exchange it at Wal-Mart next summer when I go back to the USA next year but
in case they won't I will use it. I wanted to make sure it has the required
amount of ZDDP so I sent an email to Shell Technical Support. Below is their
response.

Rob,
Yes, Rotella T has 1200 ppm zinc and is fine for your older engine.

Hi,
I have a 1975 Olds Toronado with a 455 cubic inch engine. The engine is
standard and has a flat tappet cam. I have been advised that I should use an
oil that has at least 1200 PPM of ZDDP. I have been advised that Shell
Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 contains 1200 PPM ZDDP would you please confirm
that.

I do not need to know the actual level a simple yes or no will be fine.

Thank you,
Rob Mueller

Rob, that is good oil. Use it with no worries.

I'm glad to see that the oil companies are providing straightforward
information, at least when asked. That was not the case a year ago.

Rob,
My engine was just rebuilt by Dick Paterson and he recommended either Rotella T or Rotella Synthetic (blue jug)

After the break-in I put in Rotella Syn (blue Jug)

Before the engine went I was running Mobil 1, (not that it had anything to do with the engine going)

Be careful here with need for more descriptive detail. The "old" Rotella blue synthetic was CI-4 but a few years ago it went away for the "new" CJ-4 to match the new specs for new Diesels. Much lower ZDDP content and with the high Diesel detergency you need the high ZDDP as the 2 factors work antagonisticly. Sadly I just used the last of my CI-4. http://www.sae.org/technical/papers/2007-01-1966

The lumber yard Menard's had blue jug Rotella syn 5w 40 on sale for $19 gallon last week. Says meets CI-4 on the label. Also some Walmarts have it and some don't.

Rob, I use both of them. If I were you I would use the Rotella and switch over after it is gone, if you want Mobil 1.

Greg / Ken,

Despite the response from Shell I'm going to check the label to make sure
it's the GOOD stuff before I use it. If yes I'll put it in Double Trouble's
engine and Onan for our tour next year. When I get ready to store it for the
winter I'll change over to Mobil 1 15W-50 in both. I'll fire them both up to
circulate the clean stuff so that they won't be sitting for a long period
with dirty oil.

I just changed mine yesterday. Old Rotella out and new stuff in for the winter. Then drove it 11 miles to my hanger for winter storage.

You might want to track your oil consumption on Rotella next year and then compare it to your consumption on Mobil 1.
