Regarding which grease for our CV joints up front.

On Gene's site both Valvoline 'Syn-Power'
and Valvoline 'Dura-Blend' are mentioned.

I am thinking its time to install new boots and bands
so wanted thoughts on grease.

Mine is a '77 PB with maybe 25,000 miles on
the bearings.

Richard,
The boots come with the grease to use when replacing them. If the
boots and bands are not damaged why replace them? If it ain't broke
why are you fixing it?? The earlier boots were much more durable.
The greases indicated are good choices to uses when replacing or
repacking your front bearings.

SynPower is a pure synthetic, and DuraBlend is a mix of synthetic and
conventional grease. Both are fortified with molybdenum disulfide,
which is the stuff that does the real work in a CV joint. The SynPower
has a higher temperature rating, but I'm not sure that's relevant for
the CV joints. I used SynPower, because I couldn't think of any reason
why I needed to save a dollar on grease. I still think that way.

Mobil1 has a lower temperature rating, is not moly-fortified, and has
a track record of separating even at room temperature. Remember that
grease is just an emulsion of oil and soap, so a little separation is
to be expected. But more than a tiny bit means it will run out if
given a chance.

I replaced a factory boot (yes, 35 years old) last year. The grease
was just fine. That boot was cracked on the outside but it had not
split, while the newer boot on the other side had split. I know it was
a factory boot because it had the original copper one-piece band that
is electromagnetically tightened.

The advantage to the moly additive is that it will provide lubricity
under extreme pressure, which means that it's nearly impossible for
the joint to sieze if there is grease present at all. I tried to put
the CV joint of the steering lingage together with Mobil1, and I could
not get it to move freely without binding at extreme angles. On
KenHen's instruction, I replaced it with SynPower and the problem went
away. I use it for everything now.

as good" Denney

J.R., that isn't always the case. The last boots I bought didn't come
wtih the grease.

Of course, what makes that special grease look like it was mixed with
charcoal is the moly additive. Both the SynPower and DuraBlend
products are recommended for CV joints, according to their literature.
Valvoline's non-moly grease is not.

I've been using "Caterpillar Gold " grease exclusively on my coach, how would that work in the CV's ??

The chemist in the group needs to chime in.

Cat Desert Gold grease should be good for all GMC uses. It's synthetic and has 5% moly. Big plus it's not black.

G'day,

I second Rick's use of Valvoline 'Syn-Power' on EVERYTHING! I can't see why
anyone would bother carrying more than one type of grease.

Now if I could only get it here in Australia!

I tried smuggling some back in my luggage but now that every bag is X-rayed
it got removed and a nice note telling me that I was a naughty boy was
placed in the bag! They also got my Kroil and my cigar lighter!

I've decided to do the same thing with oil and am going to put Mobil 1
15W-50 in the engine and Onan. I'll change them once a year when I put
Double Trouble to bed after our summer tours. Someone mentioned that they
paid $22.00 a bottle for it so $44.00 per year sounds reasonable to me.

Walmart must be lowering the price. I just bought a 5 qt bottle of
Mobil1 15w50 today for $21.

That was the regular sticker price on the shelf. A couple of months
ago it was about $25

Rob:

You might look into Caterpillar Desert Gold grease if you are having trouble finding something other than Mobil-1. I have been using it for several years and it has worked very well. Caterpillar is a international company and should have many outlets in Australia. The grease is full synthetic, doesn't separate like many others, has a drop point of +575F and has 5% moly-disulfide. Take a look at the specs.

Bob,

THANKS!

Good news: called Cat here in Sydney and they have it!

Bad news: it costs $14.50 USD a tube! :-(

IIRC I paid about $4.50 USD for a tube of Valvoline SynPower!

See what happens when you have a population of around 20 million vs 350
million!

You might wanna look at this grease http://www.royalpurple.com/ultra-performance-grease.html it solved trouble in the bearings of the china star bullet train traction motor, RP makes outstanding lube products, and this is an aluminum complex synthetic grease which from their specs should do well in our coaches...
