I'm replacing my speedometer and to prevent damage:
I assume the best method is to remove the eight screws holding the
instrument panel in place and tilt it back to gain access to the
speedometer. Let me know if this could lead to problems.
How do I remove the knob from the windshield wiper?
How do I remove the knob from the headlights?
All advice greatfully received.

Steve,
Some of the headlight switches have a spring pin in the knob -- push it in and pull off the knob.

Steve,
I had mine out last year, and everyone is right about the pin on the side of the headlight switch. My wiper knob was already missing, but it appeared the flat lever it goes on was threaded, so I assume it screws off. I made the assumption the best way to get at it was from the front, and it is for removal, but, if you want to not damage the old one taking it off, removing the large plastic cover that goes over the back of the cluster is much quicker and easier than I thought, and allows much better access to the spring clip that holds the speedo cable on, and the electrical connector for the indicator and illumination lighting. (I learned this to late, and managed to break all the connector pins off mine, as they are very old and fragile . . .) The hardest part is the little string or cable that runs to the steering column to move the PRNDL indicator. There is a small phillips screw that attaches it to the bottom of the part of the column that rotates with the shift lever, which isn't bad to get at. But, fishing the end back down there to re-install it takes more patience than I normally have.
Good luck,
Craig

Steve;
Be very careful with the wiper knob. The arm is cast zinc and breaks
easily. The headlight switch has a button on it that you push down to
release the shaft and knob. With the switch in the off position, push
in on the button and the shaft will come completely out with the knob.
While you have the dash apart take a close look at the wiper switch to
see that the ball is dropping all the way into the detent. If it is
not, the wipers will creep into the on position every once in a while.
You may need to file the faulty casting away a little to allow the ball
to drop into the detent correctly. JimB gave a good write up on fixing
this problem.

I just had mine out 2 months ago. Find the little button on the metal bottom of the headlight switch and push it in. The knob and attached rod should pull out while holding the button in. Remove wiper knob. Remove the 8 screws holding the dash woodgrained face plate. The ribbon for the fiber optic lights will be attachhed to the face plate and will need to be unplugged. You will then see the screws holding the speedometer in place. Also, the speedometer cable is held on by a spring clip. Push the tang on the clip toward the speedometer while pulling out on the cable. You will need to remove or at least loosen the windshield side dash panel to get at the cable. This panel is held on by 1 screw on the right side of the panel.

Craig
No, it is not threaded. It just pushes on. The "threads" are just
serrated ridges to hold it in place
