Oh yes,
I just finished redoing the slides. I added some pictures so I don't need to remember to bring the tester or the grease if we ever do it again. I also added a summary page at the end and a few other minor things. I researched the 73 and 74 issues and found that the 73 - 74 documentation was useless. I added a picture of the wiring diagram for the house in 75-76.
I still have not found out where that ground cable that we talked about on a 73-74 connects. I appears that GM may have attached it to the steel frame and then corrected the problem in 1975.
If any of the attendees want a copy of it in .pdf format send me a note off net.
I'm also going to send it to Doc White. I think GMC Eastern States may archive it somewhere.

So, what do you think, Dan, is cooling unit replacement a reasonable task
for the average GMCer to tackle? I suggested to Jim during the planning
that a demonstration like that would be more suitable than just a
description of how they rebuild the unit itself. I'm hoping for enough
feedback to tell me whether I should scrap the perfect Dometic 2652 I've got
that burned out its cooling unit.

Leon gave us a demonstration of how he tears apart a coach refer as he had
one with him. After the tear down he opened us up for questions. I told him
about my 2 year old Norcold freezing our eggs solid on the lowest setting.
Have to try and remember to turn the dang thing off thoughout the day. He
reached into the refer he had just torn apart and gave me the part that
clips onto the fins inside. Told me to try that. I came back to the coach
and replaced mine with the one he gave me. Fixed my problem. He convinced me
that when he finishes rebuilding the "guts" of a refer that it is better
than a brand new one. I am really thankful that Erv and Doc got him to come
give us the seminar.

Ken Burton,
As the guy that puts the final format to the stuff and the guy with the keys
to the website, I can say, with great authority, that it will be archived.
You also seemed to have missed a comment that your presentation was "well
grounded".
From my viewpoint it was excellent. You just didn't look quite as energetic
as Leon.
Ken Henderson,
Unless you want to bend new tubing for the cooling unit, replace it,
evacuate the system, recharge it with the right ammonia/hydrogen mixture,
repack/seal the new tubing with foam then I'd suggest getting what you need
from Leon. He'll be glad to send you a rebuilt unit in exchange for your
core if you part with some of that green stuff you'll not be able to use in
the hereafter. Of course, this means your heirs will have $400 less to spend
after you're gone. So, check with them to see which is most important; their
personal wealth or your refrigerator. If you were my dad I'd let you get the
refrigerator fixed so I could enjoy the benefits now.

<SNIP>
Ken,
Not Dan but I would say it is a reasonable task for average GMCer to take on. I wish we could of had taken a video of what Leon did because he had the old cooling unit out in 5-10 minutes. It really isn't that hard at all and then he gave the little tips/hints on what to watch out for when you put the new unit back in. The hardest part will be taking the refigerator in and out of GMC. In fact Leon said there are times he does it right inside the motorhome with unit laying on floor. Ususally due to the fact some units will not fit out of door, not usually our problem with GMC.
Hope that helps.

If you were my son, I'd have already bought a GMC, put a good drivetrain
in it, replaced the headliner, installed a new refrigerator (albeit
small 120 vac), reworked and charged the dash air, etc., etc. And then
spent a couple of years convincing you that you need it. If that ain't
enough, just suffer 'til I'm gone. :-)
Seriously, when our X-Birch refrigerator went out because I was too slow
exercising the Dometic recall, I contacted Erv, who then visited Leon
for the first time to gather information for me. Before committing to a
repair, I found a new Dometic of the same model for only $600.
Repairing a 10 yo item for 2/3 the cost of new doesn't make a lot of
sense, IMHO. By that time I'd already installed the 120 vac unit in the
X-PB, with considerable custom cabinetry to make it look right.
Now that Alan's got the X-PB, his family has been happy with the little
unit. Before they start their planned trip "out West" next summer they
may change their minds, so I'll keep the core for them. We'll argue
then about the payment. :-)
Despite my meager contribution (request to Erv for information), I'll
take credit for initiating the refrigerator presentation. Be sure to
mention it in the credits. :-)

I take it you guys are all talking about the gas/elec units? My 12V/120V unit is looking to need a charge. It never really gets very cold.

Big chuckle here. You're a real dad. Tops in my book!
Now, can we make arrangements that I assume the Henderson name and get the
other "slow to respond" guy to take mine? I come with $35,000 of my own cash
in the GMC. You could sell the other one to the new "Songer" and make money.
Nearly everybody would be happy.
Seriously, you could do the swap of core to core with Leon. Of course, he
knows where the screws are.
Leon says that his rebuilt units will perform better than knew. Based on all
he said and why, plus the multiple years of experience of his uncle and the
uncle's brother-in-law, I'd tend to see that as reasonable.
Leon also spoke somewhat favorably of Norcold saying they were more tolerant
of "out of level" operation.
Will mention your name in the credits when it hits the web. Jim Doc couldn't
remember where he came up with the idea. Now I know. What size type do you
want? Small, smaller or smallest? Your pick. If you were my dad you'd get
big, bigger or biggest.

Leon didn't provide instructions as to what to do. His web site (and the
presentation) outlines what they do handle in general terms. As to the order
for removing screws, location of screws and removal of interlocking parts,
where to watch for control module, etc. that isn't provided. The
presentation is a refined product of what is on Leon's website except for a
couple of graphics. Doc did a great job of assimilating what was there as
the core material.
I, too, thought that it would have been nice to video the presentation but I
wasn't about to approach that subject. That's probably too much of a worldly
interference even for an Amish gentleman that understands balancing his two
realms of existence.
What he did was remove the interior of the refrigerator from the cabinet. He
turned it on the face of the refrig to get things to drop forward more
easily. He pulled he guts out and could easily replace the new unit and hook
it back into the system (electric or gas). He also likes to test it before
considering it 'done'.
The presentation will get posted. It may be on an internal area for members
only. I'll let you know.

Byron, Ken, et.al.-
There were actually three people who mentioned National RV Refrigeration
to me. Being the hardheaded old curmudgeon that I am, I was holding out
for a more performance oriented seminar that didn't develop, so I took
the hints from KenH, ErvTroyer, and finally Bob Stockholm and called
Leon. I was very pleased with the seminar but when Bob turned the
lights on I wished that I had taken my video camera to that seminar. I
had my hands full managing the slides but a video of that removal would
have been encouraging to customers.
I would also like to have a film of Dan mooching a freebee off Leon. :-D
Thanks to all of them-
Doc
