4.5-liter Duramax Diesel V8 does look very good on paper. It gets better mileage than current motors and is the size of a small block with big block power. As the turbo is mounted on top the motor, I suspect it would not fit under a flat hatch. For more info see:

But regardless of how good the engine looks, we will not be able to get it for a while. The project has been "indefinitely postponed." See:

Interesting things on the horizon. I am hoping for something to replace our transmission/final drive.

This is the torque curve I was speaking of. One that increases as the rpm drops off. A good gas truck engine, with higher torque at 2000 than at any higher rpm.
Here is what we really want;

Good forward thinking. GM still puzzels me on why if they would offer it in a 1/2 ton, then why not offer it in the Tahoe. That could only help improve CAFE. What if you want the more usefull enclosed carryall body and not the p/u truck but don't want or need the longer Suburban? You're SOL. When I ask current Duramax owners about them it's usually a love it situation. For me I still have to get over the aluminum diesel block in my brain. That's as in engine with "aluminum block' and "aluminum block in my brain" towards aluminum blocks. I guess the unit is cappable of probably 3x?? the OP of it's factory state of tune (rather detune) before grenading so it should live and live as delivered. I wonder how they rate it for towing where you are in boost for continuous duty as compared for just short term acceleration and passing situations. We shall see if it ever comes to light. Hope it does and is built here or is this an Izuzu joint venture again?

From what I read, it is a fully in house GM product. I understand that Ford did something similar (all in house) with their latest PowerStroke.

I had a coworker in the past with a diesel K5 Blazer. That thing was a rock, and it wasn't even the current diesel engine. I think GM avoids the Diesel in the Tahoe and SWB Yukon because it has become a grocery getter. I'd consider one if the Diesel were avail.

I read the new engine plant is $100 million dollars and 100% GM. It
also states "No Isuzu connection."

you might wanna rethink that "aluminum block" block in your mind, modern Aluminum after market blocks are capable of holding insane power numbers. just look at the engines based on Aluminum Dart and World Casting blocks, I saw an article in MM&FF about a World's "Man'o'War" based engine for the mustang, it was a blown 408 Windsor motor making near 1,100 bhp in a streetable package! Worlds windsor blocks also only weight 108 pounds with the mains installed, and are exceptionally rigid. OEM cast iron blocks cant compare. so its entirely plausable that a modern motor put out by one of the big three can also use this technology in an OEM application.
I want one of those Man'o'War AL blocks for my biturbo mustang 427 project, but sadly the $4,500 pricetag of the bare block is keeping one a tad out of reach ATM.
