Does anyone have a source for a kit to convert OEM rear brakes to 3" wide
shoes?

An owner in Minnesota, "Dutch" DeVries, at one time had done this and had
assembled kits for sale. I however, cannot find him listed anywhere among
current lists of GMCMh vendors. Replacement hardware is required for
securing the wider shoes to the backing plate and relocating the brake
cylinder to center on the shoes.

Thanks,

Hey Fred;

Are the rear OEM drums wide enough to accept the 3" wide shoes??

not such a good idea.........Terry

Fred,

I think John Evans has wider brake shoes available, but I don't think
they're as wide a 3".

Before committing to such a mod, one should read Dave Mumert's notes at

I agree. It's pretty well proven by Dave's calculations at the link I
provided a few minutes ago. What I did not mention is that with the
larger area it's also more difficult to wipe off the water when they're
wet. As those who drove all-drum vehicles will recall, water
effectively eliminated braking for a while after one drove through a puddle.
