I have the electronic choke with the black box mounted on intake manifold. the unit is wired correctly as per instructions. When I turn on the ignition the spring heats and gradually moves the choke to the closed position. I am Questioning the possibility that this tyhing is working backwords?....Brian 77ele 455

Unplug the wire on the choke going to the thermistor (the black box mounted on the intake manifold).
Does the choke still heat up when you turn on the key? If so you have a short to ground inside the heater coil assembly.
If not, then what temperature is the engine when you are testing it. If it is hot then the thermister is doing it's job. If it is cold then you have a bad thermister.

FORGET MY RECOMMENDATION. I misread your posting. I agree with Dan. The thing is running backwards. Cold it should be closed and as it warmms up it should start to open.
Sorry for the confusion.

the ones i've seen the spring is crimped to the heater element and cannot be removed. it is my understanding that you have to buy these for the direction you want them to move. there are some part numbers in the GMCMI parts book for the type you have.
