I want to replace the gas lines in my 78 Birchaven and need to know how much gas is in the tanks when the low fuel warning light comes on? I have noticed it come on just recently when I put $20 bucks in and drove it for a 20 mile warm up.

Someone posted that they thought 7 gallons. Anyone know for sure? I don't want to have to drain out too much gas.

According to the GMC Operating manual, the light should come on when you're down to 5 gallons if you're running on the main tank. If you switch to the aux. tank, the light should go out, then come back on when you're down to five gallons in the reserve tank.

Hope this helps!

How are you planning to drain the remaining gas from the tanks? I would not recommend pulling the drain plug. Whatever gas is in the tanks when the drain plug is pulled is going to come out pretty much uncontrolled. You have to know for sure how much gas is in there so you can have an appropriate container available. You will very likely end up wearing some of the gas, not a good practice for a number of reasons.

I would recommend using an electric pump to pump the tanks out. For starters have your other vehicles tanks as close to empty as possible. Have a 5 gallon fuel can available. Obtain an inexpensive electric fuel pump, wire it up with long clip leads with an in-line switch (make the leads long enough to reach the battery and also to place the switch out of the fume zone). Disconnect the fuel line at the front frame and connect the electric pump there. Fill the gas can using the pump, dump the filled can into your other vehicles, repeat until empty. On my 74 there was less that one half gallon in each tank after pumping this way. The tanks were then removed without spilling any remaining fuel.

If your selector valve does not work connect the fuel pump to the fuel lines where they enter the selector valve.
