Noticed today while checking out some other accessories around the engine that large top hose going from top of engine to top of radiator on drivers side had a large bubble near the radiator. This bubble is about the size of a ostrich egg. This was a new hose less than a year ago when I had engine rebuilt. Anybody know what causes a bulge like that? Defect in hose or what? Part no?

You got a defective hose. I got mine from Jim Bounds and it has been on for 3 years. Still looks new.

The hose is basically two layers with a cord mesh between them so it won't expand under pressure - think of the chinese finger things you played with as a kid. A pinhole in the inner layer will allow the water get between the two layers and blow up the outer layer like a balloon.

Find out brand of hose . Goodyear/Gates. I will send you a new one in
exchange as this should not happen.
You do not need to show me proof . Just need to know if it is Goodyear
or Gates. Any other brand I cannot help you.
I feel that the only way the manufactures can get a feel for the life
of their product is to get it back in their Warranty bins.
Most parts stores refuse warranty as they do not make a cent on it. We
feel otherwise, take care of customers and they will come back again.

Micheal,

The hose is defective. Brett's description of the situation is accurate.
Failure is very likely and that hose should be replaced as soon as possible.
When the outer jacket bursts, you will loose the coolant in the blister and be left with (at least) a pin-hole leak in the remaining hose.
If you have to travel with this condition, it is possible, but it is not advised.

Mark both ends of the bubble.
Let the pressure out of the cooling system. (It should go down if not away, but may take some time.)
Over wrap the bubble with a cloth tape (not electrical or masking tape - some types of duct tape might do).
Wrap it as tightly as you can manage and extend past the known bubble end by a hose diameter.
This is a temporary jury-rig that can not be counted on to survive any stressful operation.

Good Luck

Michael,

When you install the new hose make sure that it does not rest on the fan
shroud support strut that attaches to the intake manifold.

I recently replaced my cast iron manifold with an aluminium one from Jim K
and when I took the upper hose off I noted a small dimple in it where it had
been rubbing on the strut. I could just barely see a spec of white thread so
I took cut a 1 1/2" wide piece of hose off an old radiator hose and made a
doubler. I filled the dimple with black silicone and coated the inside of
the doubler also. I spread the doubler out so it would go over the hose
without having to slide it and placed it centrally over the dimple. I then
wrapped a couple of tie wraps around the doubler, wiped off the silicone
that had oozed out and let it cure overnight.

When I installed the hose I twisted it slightly so that it did not contact
the fan shroud bracket or anything else.

Replaced the top radiator hose today and it had number 2015466 on it. Couldn't tell if it was Gates, Goodyear or whatever? Per the parts interchange book from GMCMI that is upper radiator hose for a 403 engine.

My coach is a '78 but has 455 engine. My coach should have been originally fitted with 403.

I had bought a gates hose for a 455 #20598 and had to cut about 2 inches off one side and about 1 1/2 inch off other side to make it fit without touching alternator or belts. Hoses were slightly different molded type hoses.

Should I have used the 403 hose as my coach is a '78?
