I was at several Men's Malls today looking for parts for several projects. All of them were a mess. . .
There were dead vehicles from the CARS program just stacked (actually) all over. The better bodies and prices marked on the doors and glass that were extraordinarily low and people were hauling parts out like it was some sort of a sidewalk sale.

In one yard there was a row of Lumina/Silhouette/Trans Sport and I almost stopped to collect a bouquet of wiper arms, but I was out of time at that point. I've got my set or I would be headed back there.

If you need stuff for any decade old vehicle, it is worth your while to go and look.

Matt-
You could probably do well collecting them and selling them at the
GMC-ES Fall Rally in Elkhart IN on October 15-18th.
I'll purchase a set plus a used wiper motor.

Matt,
Which Men's Malls do you visit. I only recently discovered Parts Galore (one on 8 mile near VanDyke and one on West Warren east of Livernois.)

It was so much fun, I'm looking for others to visit. And I didn't get any wiper motors or arms either, as I was rushed for time as well,(roped into hunting down parts for a friend's daughter's car . . .) but thinking of making another run soon. Plus, I promised I would hunt down some connectors for Ken Henderson, when I get a chance.

Take care,
Craig

Craig,

I appreciate the thought of getting Lumina wiper motor connectors. But, my
previous solicitation was so successful, I've got a several year supply in
stock. Better to get motors to sell to folks to encourage them to order my
kits! :-)

Thanks anyway,

Ken Henderson

Craig,

Waterford is a long way from here, are you sure you want to drive three/quarters of an hour before you start?

Dive into switchboard.com, put in used autoparts - Waterford,Mi and then change to Distance to clear out the paid entries. Call each and ask if they let people wander and pull on their own. Many yards do not allow that these days.

Also, read the note from Ken.

I sure wish I could find a mens mall in the Milwaukee area that would let me go in and get my own stuff.

Every place I've been in here you go in and up the counter and they check their computer for "inventory"......with a $25 min charge for anything.

Charles,
If you mean blades for the original arms, they can be ordered from real auto parts by part number - read>>
http://users.sfo.com/~eagle/body.html#WIPER
But be careful of the age of the pars you get.

Chris,

Yes, that's the only motor I've ever used on it, though it's drilled for
the surplus Saturn motors also. The nice thing about the Lumina motor is
that it was definitely designed to swing long arms -- witness our use of the
driver's side arms on the GMC. And, it has the intermittent wipe and
automatic wipe with wash functions built in so we don't have to use an
external control. And it's the only motor for which I offer a wiring
harness or any other wiring help.

The $15-$20 junkyard price is nice, but the $65-$85 price for lifetime
warranted rebuilt or new ones from AutoZone and others isn't too hard to
bear.

As, usual, the long answer to the short question. Couldn't just say "Yes".

Has anyone made the bracket mounting the Lumina motor to the GMC as a home project? I am too cheap to buy this stuff. Looks very easy to fabricate for less than $20. A couple of toggle switches and some standard wiring should work too. Can't see putting hundreds of dollars into this project.

Phil,

Look at this carefully before you start.

The real problem is converting the rotary motion from the motor in to a usable oscillation and with significant reliability. If you pull the entire wiper drive out of the donor, you will find it to be substantial. This is why the kit comes with a greasable primary pivot and two really truly spherical rod ends. And I can bet Ken did look at less expensive parts.

The switches is the easy part. (I bet one out of a Silhouette would work.)

Matt (who has looked and collected motors)

I still don't think this is rocket science. As far as the spherical rod end bearings are concerned, I am sure two of the stock Lumina bearings could be used with a fabricated connector between them. All this just makes the job more interesting.

What is the advantage of the Lumina Wiper Arm and is it only the Drivers side that is of interest. If so, do you use two drivers side arms?

Yes, You use two of the drivers side arms. The passenger side does not have the bend in it to get over the windshield. Look at the photo book, or some of the GMC photos to see what is required. You pull off the old arms, put a taper on your "new" arms and bolt them on. Piece of cake.

It may have been my second extravagance - buying the Lumina arms from Jim K. But for me the benefit is that I can actually buy wiper blades at an autoparts store. On the trip back from Ohio to California the wipers were in terrible shape. We had stopped at a few parts stores and they were shooting blanks. Finally we McGuyver-ed something, and wouldn't you know the rain stopped.

Well, I needed to put that Rain-X on anyhow...

Because, with the new arms, I can buy blades and refills anywhere (even Kavemart and Wallyworld). Buy the blades for a Silhouette (but watch out -somebody's listing is wrong - forgot whose), Lumina or Transport. You can actually still get refills at real parts stores for half the price of new blades if have Anco or Trico blades.

I had had plenty of that with my old Jeep. I had to order blades at 15$ each. They were usually bad when I got them.

You can almost use both arms, but the passenger side works out strangely. The driver's side parks nicely when they are finally set right.
