Richard, I kept my elec water heater also but when it goes I will re plumb and move our on demand unit. I too have an automatic fire extinguisher in the refer box vent. Makes good sense.

You Royale guys don't know how good you have it. You already have LP gas
water heaters, dry baths and the possibility of extra storage where the old
water heater was located.
In my case, the space occupied by my OEM water heater doesn't really lend
itself to becoming an outside accessible storage compartment. The only
access is under the bathroom sink behind the toilet paper storage area.
Also, the GM finished coaches like my Palm Beach, only have electric water
heaters with an engine coolant loop. All the ones I know about never had
propane water heaters or reefers for that matter. It has always been my
understanding that retrofitting one of them to a " propane/electric/heat
exchanger combo " was a real major project by the time you cut a hole in the
side of the coach.

I have been standing on my head working on the Eleganza Sink and thinking... the refrigerator vented cabinet is right there. The hotwater pipes are right there. Because we have a 3 way, LP is right there. The wall is about zero inches thick from tapping on it.

George. I have been reconsidering the Tankless myself.
I had reservations because the tankless does not have a pilot to keep the coils from freezing.
You would need to be able to valve it out and drain, or winterize, on cold season.
And placement, but in my case, I was considering ELECTRIC. It is nothing to fire up the ONAN to get some hot water. This puts another mark in the list to get rid of the propane.
In the case of an electric, it can go under the bath sink, where the current watt buster sits and still space for storage. You can use the existing power lines and piping.
And you dont have to valve it out when you winterized the entrire system since they hold under a gallon, I think it was like a quart, of liquid.
I am on the positive side now and feel it is unlikely that I will replace the tank unit with another tank.
My thoughts.

Next time you go on safari to find the leak, check the supply valve on tank. They will leak if they are not all the way open. You may be smelling the gas leaking from the valve stem. The valve is not bad. It's just the nature of the beast. It happened to me.

Richard,
You shouldn't make too much of the task of installing an access door for an
instant hot water heater: If you're willing to add that "wart" to the side
of your nice clean-sided GMC, it's EASY. Just buy a Norcold or Dometic
access door, as suits your taste; cut an appropriately sized hole with a
saber saw, shear, or router; and, screw the new door in place. That easy.
No need for any reinforcing frame, etc. You could use just a simple "top
hat" vent in the roof for the small vent it needs; no need to add a large
refrigerator type.

Last Thursday I took my GMC to have the propane tank topped up. I made
the mistake of leaving the supply valve open. When the attendant turned
it off, he got a whiff of mercaptan and told me he couldn't fill the
tank because it was leaking. As I could not convince him of "the nature
of the beast" where the valve seals positively only when fully open or
fully closed, I had to leave it turned off and drive a block to the next
service station.

I have not tried them out to see if they actually work. They are supposed to
go off if the temperature exceeds a certain amount. Sort of like sprinklers
in a building.
I think Dan sells these...

Have you considered the load the electric units impose? Just looking at the
first one on Google: 11.5kW = 220 vac X 48 amps!
You may not be happy with the temperature rise a 6kW generator can develop.

Ok, My water system has been dead since I bought it.
Actually, I can use it, but I don't trust the water tank, when you shine a light in to it, the tank looks like a light globe with all the cracks in the body. It holds water, but for how long???
And one of the previous PO's re-installed the hot water heater so the drain is at the halfway point. it can't be drained all the way down. it has held water in it since I bought the GMC in o4. ( ooowww, ichy )
And I had to ad the bypass for winterizing the system, maybe I should have left it in the system so it would get rinsed now and then.
So actually, I have never used hot water in the RV since I owned it. Fort Wilderness and the COOP RESORT being my primary campgrounds, and Fort Wilderness has very nice showers and laundry facilities.
I am also leary of the hap hazzard way the POs re-installed the heavy water heater under the sink.
and now they make a shower spray that has the hot water heater in it.
It is getting harder to not look at the electric units. Some had lower power ratings than you quoted. I did not look at the heat rise figures yet, but with my current problem, the money will go to try to get the RV to a condition where I can trust it on a SHORT trip. Then we work on her for a LONG trip.
Anyway, the equipment on the market is getting better and this old stuff is still deteriorating.
I never thought I would consider the tankless, now I think there might be a future for one. All in good time I guess.
Thanks

Dan,
I hope it will be a long time before my water heater goes out since I
replaced the original unit with a Jim Damaere stainless steel tank.
I would rather use a campground's electricity or engine coolant while
driving to heat water. LP gas is expensive. It is only when dry camping
that I would use the instant water heater. At least that is what I think
now.

Since you have a brand new unit and it's not in the way, I would probably do the same thing, put the demand one in-line.
I needed to get rid of my tank water heater because it was under the sofa and too high to fit under my new convert-a-sofa. I also had to get rid of my NT 22 furnace and go with a low profile which just fit at 7 1/2" high.

Ray, Dan,
It's been a few months now, how are you liking your water heaters?
Still happy?
I am getting ready to buy one . I'm leaning towards installing one in the refer cab, like Ray did, but using the unit Dan and Teri have, and adding a vent flue.
Looks like the one Dan and Teri have is on ebay for $200 or bids, and it isn't selling for the $100 bids it's getting. I may Bid $118 which I think is what you guys paid?
Cheers!
