My gas guzzling fuel injected auto is using more and more gas as time goes by. Does anybody have any experience with fuel injector cleaners? If so, what brand? Do the garage cleaning machines really work?

Ed,
What leads you to suspect the injectors?

Techron

But I only use this when I'm having driveability problems. I've never noticed the mpg changing when I use Techron, and I do track my mileage for last fill, last five fills, and since purchase. (yeah I know, the CFO says the same thing)

More fuel as time goes by

One sure bet is the loss of mileage with the addition of corn alcohol.

I have tracked a loss in mileage ever since they started adding that stuff, and didn't they just increase the amount to 20%???

It's a lot less efficent compared to gas. Take a look at how many BTUs a gallon of gas will put out then check on ethanol. Brazil has a lot of pure alcohol fueled cars - mowed down the rain forest and planted sugar cane to produce fuel. The VW Bugs down there have a 16 gallon tank compared to the 10 gallon tank here to make up for the increased fuel required to get an acceptable range out of the car.

Also it's IMPORTANT to make sure all your fuel lines, fuel pump and carb parts are compatable with the new fuels. When alcohol first hit the boat docks they were inundated with the stuff eating through the fiberglass fuel tanks. Old rubber hoses fare no better.

My '01 Ford Explorer Sport Trac got around 18mpg when new and we were using non-oxygenated fuels part of the year. I could see a step function in the fuel economy at the seasonal change-over.

Now we use the fuel year round, and I get 15MPG. I get 18-19 on long trips, and if I gas up in a place that doesn't use it, I see better results.

Anyone had any problems with the GMC's rubber lines and the "gasohol" we are using now?

Happened with diesel, too. When Kalifornia went to "ultra-low sulphur" diesel, my old 6.2 Suburban went from 27 MPG/Highway to 19 MPG/Highway and then the injector pump ate itself and the injector o-rings disolved. $2000 in repairs later and still crappy fuel economy.

Terry,
Cetane, available at WallyWorld, has an injector lube ingredient. I
always use the stuff, as did the PO. 215,000 miles now and no pump or
injector failures. Octane booster too.

Dang, Terry. I liked your truck too. Ken was good at getting it to smoke the rear tires while we were running around Fremont in it. Had plenty of zip.

Does anybody have a spare 12 volt fuse panel for a 1976 GMC Royale. The 50
amp fuse holder on mine is broken and I cannot get a consistent circuit. Any
help would be appreciated.

Terry,
The original fuse panels are not readily available. I assume that
the 50 amp is the line from the battery/charger to the fuse panel. I
would suggest that it be replaced with a circuit breaker such as:

http://www.wiringproducts.com/contents/en-us/p188.html

You can also find these circuit beakers at most autoparts stores also.

There are any number of replacement fuse blocks you could use and I
would suggest that you step up to the newer ATO/ATC fuses

Also you should consider replacing your old buzz box if you still
have one installed in the coach.

Progressive Dynamics has a very good unit that is used by many GMCers.

Dear John,

Many thanks for your e.mail. Ido have an Intelli 45 amp Converter with
wizard. It is my old house fuse panel that is the problem. I do believe it
is the original.

Terry,

If you're the type that likes to scrounge in recycling yards
- especially the kind where you can pick your own parts -
you might check out some of the upper end van conversions
from the 80s. Some of the better van shops used some really
nice components. I've found several very good fuse/breaker
blocks/distribution panels in those vans. And they have many
other components that are highly adaptable to a GMC.

You might also look around for places that part out
handicapped/transport/ambulance-style vans. The best
components are used in those. A few weeks back I spent over
$200 on 55 Bosch 30/40 amp relays, several diode blocks, a
dozen or so 10/20/30/40/50 amp circuit breakers, a couple of
200-amp big boy power relays and a half dozen or so power
and ground buss bars. It pays to look around in those yards.

You can also check around some of the car stereo specialty
shops in your area. Some mighty fine electrical components
are available. If you have to go on-line to shop, Parts
Express has a good selection of mobile electronics including
fuse panels, ground and power busses, etc.

Remember that there isn't any magic in the OEM components.
There is so much good stuff out there today, that you can
update your coach in ways the OEM guys couldn't even imagine
back when.

Good luck.

Congrats, Terry! You will have so much fun you'll wish you had done it
years ago.

I retired from IBM 26 years ago-about the same amount of time I was with
them!
I took my own advice and retired at age 51.

Thanks, Dave, one difference, the IBM that you retired from
26 years ago is nothing
like the current company. The re-swizzled the retirement
plan in 1995, the net
result being that we only get about 40% of what we should
have gotten under
the old plan. They also took away our lifetime medical.
