G’day,

I am responding to this question because I tried to help Jim K get a locking
final drive made in Australia.

As I understand it year or so ago Jim contacted several companies that make
locking diffs for rear wheel drive vehicles in the USA and none of the
manufacturers were interested in a thirty plus year old vehicle with limited
numbers.

He then contacted the USA sales rep for an Aussie company called ARB. The
sales rep got him to send a ring gear carrier to him in Washington state.
Jim then waited, and waited, and waited, and waited; NADA.

I was talking to him one day when the subject came up and noted that I would
be happy to contact ARB in Australia for him to see what was going on. When
I called their engineering manager and asked him what the status of the diff
locker was for the GMC he DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Evidently the
sales rep in Washington state had fed Jim a line of BS. At any rate Jim
followed up with the sales rep and at the end of the day ARB was not
interested either.

I found a small company in Melbourne called J.R. McNamara that makes locking
diffs for rock climbers and gave them a call, I explained what the GMC was
and that there was a very limited market. I asked if they would be
interested in making a locking diff for it. Jeff told me he would have to
see one of the units before he could say yes or no. I had a spare 3.07 which
I sent down to him. He had it for a couple of weeks and I called to see what
he thought and he noted that at first glance it appeared that there wasn’t
enough room in the housing to fit the locking mechanism. He promised to take
it apart and see what he could do.

Just before I came to the USA for this year’s tour I called Jeff and he
noted that he did his best but there just wasn’t enough room to fit the
parts.

At any rate that’s the situation vis-à-vis locking diff’s for GMC’s.

Bottom line: you would have to get a larger final drive housing made and I
hate to think what that would cost! Plus you would have to extend it towards
the drivers side as there is no room to go towards the passenger side.

Jim K, hope I didn’t step on your toes but I figured I’d save you the time!
