G'day,
Now that Double Trouble is registered I'm attacking the TTD list. I have
prioritized them by: 1) things that Helen wants fixed 2) things that I want
fixed. Number one on Helen's list was the glove compartment door - it popped
open and smacked her in the knee several times last year!. That problem has
been solved. Number two on her list was water dripping on her from the
passenger side window and that's what I'm working on now. I scraped all the
sealant around the side windows as well as the goop a PO put around the
windshield. I figure black RTV will work well there.
At any rate I did some poking around Gene's website and couldn't find any
info on sealants / adhesives. I reckon having a spread sheet that details
what sealants / adhesives to use and where would be most helpful.
For example I found that 3M - 5200 worked great on the black tank.
What do other use to:
1) seal the windows when removed
2) seal body seams that need painting
3) seal the windshield / side windows
4) seal the rear window
5) seal roof exhaust fans
6) seal roof air conditioner
7) seal roof vents
It would be good to know if they could be painted and how much / fast they
shrank.

Gene,
Yes, I found: http://gmcmotorhome.info/body.html#leaks but it doesn't
mention any specific brands of sealant.
I didn't think to look at the photo site. I will see if I can find some of
the PL stuff here in Houston - THANKS!
I still think it would be a good idea to have a spread sheet with detailed
specific info on various and sundry chemicals we use to maintain the GMC..

Thanks for the welcome "home."
As far as the clearance lights go it's "been there, done that!" I replaced
them with LED units and all new stainless steel screws. Got lucky and only
had to replace one nut sert.
Unfortunately our route is Houston - New Orleans - Memphis - Elkhart (shop
for goodies) - Chicago - Milwaukee - Iola (antique car show) - St. Louis -
Dallas - Houston and we won't be heading as far east as Virginia.

Welcome back to what is left of America!
We had a similar leak issue from the sides of the headliner when we
cornered. I did the soapy water test using a leaf blower perched on a
step ladder with the blower extension duck taped through a hole in
plywood that filled the window space. Found that the bubbles were
minimal except through the clearance/running lights on the front roof.
The gaskets were dried up both under the lights fixtures and gaskets
under the lens. Gaskets are available from GMC vendors but getting those
rusty screws out are a be-atch.
Of course, I realize that your leaks may be elsewhere but don't discount
those lights.

3M-5200 is a polyurethane that is extremely tenacious - even uncured. You know that now.
If you are going to use it, have some mineral spirits or kerosene around to clean up. You will probably need that and about a roll and an half of paper towels (don’t even think of try to stretch the use of these - just wipe and toss).
When you find out where some ended up that you didn’t really want it to be, go get some De-Bond. It comes in three prices Automotive, Handyman and Marine. It seems to all be the same, but maybe they felt guilty trying to charge so much more for the RV or Aircraft versions. It will loosen the grip of most all polyurethanes and polysulfides.
I use these sealants all the time and now all I have to do is decide if I love or hate them.

Rob,
After having new windshields installed, there was still leakage across the
top of the windshield. Before the Topeka paint job, while I still thought
PL Polyurethane was good for EVERYTHING, I applied it between the fiberglass
and the rubber gasket. Made a nice smooth surface and seemed to stop the
leaking; I had them paint right over the polyurethane.
After 3 years or so, not only did the paint crack and come off of the PL,
but the caulk itself began to develop wide cracks every 2"-3". Obviously,
the leaks returned.
Then I did what I should have done in the first place: Sought some
professional advice. The paint & body man told me to scrape all that mess
out and replace it with black 3M butyl rope caulk. I did, and it's still
pristine 3 years or so later -- not covered in road dust like I thought it
would be. And it's hardly noticeable that it's not exactly the same as the
metallic black "raccoon mask".
I thought I had the box with the remaining 3M butyl, but can't find it.
It's about 3/4"x3"x12", white with green print. Calling it "rope caulk" is
sort of misleading: the rope is cut into 12" lengths and laid side-by-side
so that it forms ridged rectangle. Dividing paper between layers keeps it
from becoming a single block. Pulled apart at the ridges, you can easily
stick the strips end-to-end for as long as needed or take pieces
side-by-side and knead them together by rolling between palms on a table top
to make a larger diameter rope. Handy stuff.

applied around the side windows and top of the windshield, I figure I've got
another good days work cleaning it back to a good surface for the sealant to
stick to.
It sounds like 3M butyl rope caulk is what the PO of The Blue Streak used in
Australia. Kinda looks and feels like black tar?
At any rate I will find some for Double Trouble.

3M makes a product called Body Seam Sealer.......supposed to be very good with great paint adhesion....I will find out after I paint

Ray,
The 3M Ultrapro body Seam sealer is what Topeka uses to seal all the
seams on the body before priming, but it can also be used after
priming. It provides excellent paint adhesion.

Rob,
Try butyl rubber tape. We use it for windows and any thing we put on the coach. You can get it in 1/2 inch wide, 3/16 inch thickm, and 25 foot rolls. If you can't find it, I can send you some. Camper World or most RV places will have it.

We have used some caulking from Lexal which seems very good
around sinks and toilets.
Comes in clear and white, maybe more colors.
Anyone try this stuff?

We are planning to have a seminar on leak sources and repair thereof. Do any of you
consider yourselves knowledgeable in the various types of sealants to use/not use for
what purpose, and would you be interested in participating in the seminar? Or if you
can recommend someone, that would be helpful as well. Forrest Crow has found 30+ leak
sources he is going to talk about and it would be nice to have someone authoritative
on proper sealants and usage. As an alternative, I may try to get a 3M guy there to
expound upon sealants/adhesives and other products of theirs that we may find useful.
Would many of you find that helpful?

G'day,
Now that Double Trouble is registered I'm attacking the TTD list. I have prioritized
them by: 1) things that Helen wants fixed 2) things that I want fixed. Number one on
Helen's list was the glove compartment door - it popped open and smacked her in the
knee several times last year!. That problem has been solved. Number two on her list
was water dripping on her from the passenger side window and that's what I'm working
on now. I scraped all the sealant around the side windows as well as the goop a PO put
around the windshield. I figure black RTV will work well there.
At any rate I did some poking around Gene's website and couldn't find any info on
sealants / adhesives. I reckon having a spread sheet that details what sealants /
adhesives to use and where would be most helpful.
For example I found that 3M - 5200 worked great on the black tank.
What do other use to:
1) seal the windows when removed
2) seal body seams that need painting
3) seal the windshield / side windows
4) seal the rear window
5) seal roof exhaust fans
6) seal roof air conditioner
7) seal roof vents
It would be good to know if they could be painted and how much / fast they shrank.
