Good Morning

Has anyone come up with a good place to store the spare tire other than on the rear of the coach or in the roof pod?

I'd like to build a new larger storage box for the rear (I currently have a Frank Jenkins storage box), but I can't find a good place to stick the spare. I thought about a new side storage door and sliding it in under the sofa, but the aluminum structural ribs won't allow it to fit.

Any ideas ??

Thanks.

Ray

You might have to work it into your plans of a larger storage box but this is the closest idea I can come up with: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=28863 (OBTW this is NOT one of mine. Wish it was...)

The picture is of Tom Phipps's coach. As the caption states, he's not
a fan of how much inside storage it eats.

The tire is 30" in diameter, and it just won't fit in any of the
places people think it might.

But mounted as from the factory, it really inhibits any rear storage
design. If it was incorporated into storage that went high enough to
enclose it, it could be put to one side, and the space left would
accommodate thinks with a lot more flexibility.

Or, you could really pimp your ride with something like this:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=5248

The storage compartment on the right wasn't bad to have, but in the
end this is still better:

(Jim Bounds and Jim Galbavy are the recognizable models. Was that four
years ago?!)

On Ron Tase's 31' coach he placed his spare horizontally under the bed
with a slide out just above the rear bumper. there must be a photo
somewhere but I don't have any pics of tthe back of his old stretch.

That's a pretty slick idea.

I did figure out that if I dropped down the size of the spare to a 215/75R16 that I would fit under my sofa and between the structural ribs of the side wall. Considering a spare is for an emergency situation only, that might be an alternative.

Thoughts ???

Story time: When my father-in-law (the PO who needed a winter project

of what he'd done, he consulted one of my wife's cousins who is a

if you think it's good enough, then it's good enough."

A couple of years after we bought the coach, that same cousin came to

Ken, of course, thought a little Bondo and smoothing would solve the
problem.

Guess I must have thought anyone with the taste to buy it wouldn't be around
long enough to help me count my 'possums and we wouldn't have to keep
looking at it.

Or maybe I was just in an unusually sympathetic mood and couldn't bear to be
honest...

I had made a deal with Bill Wessels for the new back end within two
weeks of owning the coach. It took me another eight months to get to
it, and at the present rate it may take another 8 years to get it
painted, but I just couldn't abide the look of it as it was. At least
now it's the right shape and we have recovered the lost interior
space, even if we are now multi-colored. I also bet we shaved 500
pounds off the back end in addition to the 250 pounds that came off
when replacing the Onan with a Generac--following the lead of
you-know-who.

> Are you telling us NOT to take advice from Ken from time to time....??

You have to use your own judgment here. Good luck. Not following his
advice entails certain risks, too.

I have thought of moving the roof pod to a trailer hitch mounted platform. The spare will fit in the pod with a fair amount of room left over.

Anyone know if it will fit between the last two frame rails under the rear of the coach? I was thinking of using a cable hoist unit from a pickup truck and mounting it there. Of course, the waste drain pipe needs to be moved, but a those of you with macerators may have the room? My black tank is currently in my back yard, so I have no pipe there!

Wonder how a smaller spare would work....like a GMC equivalent to one of those small spares like the cars now use.

Someone was nice enough to post the photos of my under the bed spare tire storage. This was done by Bill Harvey (GMC Western States) about 1991, when he had the entire interior re-done.
I have removed the spare, and placed it back where it belongs. I intend to re-do the interior and reclaim the space. It takes up too much valuable room.
Do you think that you could find a 215/75R16 that would carry the GMC load?

Tom Phipps,

Honest, I'm leaving for Bean Station tomorrow.

Measure the space allowed then measure the wheel and tire. I felt it
would have scuffed the tire badly going over speed bumps and secondary
roads. Seems like an ideal place if you can get by with a properly rated
but skinny tire.

Nahh. I used to drive a lowrider Mini truck and my spare never dragged on anything. Seriously though, perhaps the room is there.

I also have an extended rear bumper from when the PO tossed the Onan and installed an el-cheapo genny on the rear. I have plans to install a "trunk" to hold things and house the mini split condensing unit if I ever get around to choosing the one I like.

This could be big enough for a spare.

If I wanted to get rid of the spare, that's what I'd do. Use it only on a
center or rear position, with swaps as needed to handle a front flat. Seems
to me a better solution than tying up a vacant arm. Of course, on my
X-Birch, there's no place to hide even a tiny spare. :-)

Wonder how a smaller spare would work....like a GMC equivalent to one of
those small spares like the cars now use.
