Is there a GMC windshield installation presentation or write up that shows GMC specific tips and recommended materials? I have new windshields set to be installed this weekend by an experienced auto glass guy that has never done a GMC replacement. I'm looking to avoid problems by having information to show the guy.

I had taken pictures of the installation materials that Ken Burton's guys used at the last Mansfield GMCMI, but Murphy took out two of my backup hard drives and looks like those pictures are gone. I've searched the forum and photo site but haven't found any good write ups or list of materials. I'm pretty sure that someone posted a picture of the materials used at a Burton Installation GMC Festival, but I can't find it.

Any help and tips appreciated. Thanks.

Richard

I don't know of any materials that you can find to install the windshilds.

I had that very expensive glass installed a year ago by the guys that install it at the rallys. Personally I wouldn't suggest using someone that has
never installed this curved GMC motorhome glass.

My best thoughts for you, is to use the guys that install the glass at the rallys or make special arrangements to have it done BY THEM else where.

I watched them as they installed my glass and I thought sure that glass was going to break.
AND it takes TWO people to install it and a good part of the day for both sides.

Something I didn't know was the glass is integral to holding the roof up. not suggested to remove both sides at the same time.

They generally NEVER replace the rubber molding that seals the glass to the GMC, they repair it with some special stuff.
also, they said it is not unusual to have fiber glass damage, (which will have to be repaired) where the rubber slips onto the GMC.
I was lucky, I had very little damage.

From my point of view, you have to know what you are doing to put that glass in, both people working together, pushing, sliding, even bending the glass (I told you I thought they were going to break it while watching them) and they have to work as a unit to get that difficult glass in place and sealed.

They worked for a while to get the glass to sit into those rubber slots as the glass does not automatically slide in place, they had to massage it in and even then it seemed to be barking back.

I have had glass replaced on various vehicles but none was as difficult, from my viewpoint, as installing this curved GMC windshield glass.

If your installers cannot find any information, and I dont think they will, you would be far better off going to experienced installers.

And don't forget to replace all the screws holding the dash board

Gentlemen,
It is my intention to video document the installation of GMC windshields at the "Welcome Back" rally, It is my hope that the installers will narrate the installation process, talk about the problems/solutions and the proper materials. With luck, they will also talk about unusual stuff and help create a document that fully describes the process. I will deliver this document to Kim who will post it on the GMCMI website. I hope this all works.

Richard,
A glass installer friend and I removed the windshields for some SMC leaks repair and dash work.
to remove we cut the rubber gasket ( it very old and brittle ), while the dash work was ongoing the glass was being tinted.

The first glass took about an hour with some frustrations , to install DO NOT start at the center and work out, for us
it was real easy when we switched and started on the outside and work to center.

Since you want to save the gasket, you might conceder removing from center. I have not seen anyone else do this work, going
only by our experience. Good luck.

I put Doug up to this. I intend to take his output and add some additional narrative where necessary. Then I will have Paul, one of the owners of the company, view it and add or correct anything he sees. I have watched at least 50 of these done but never actually done the hands on installation.

Greetings,

I agree.... Start from the outside lower edge.

My wife and I spent about an hour and a half trying to set the glass in using inside out method.... TWICE!

Both times, by the time we started to get near the outside edges, the glass was about 1/4" shy of the gasket - WAY outside my comfort zone.

We abandoned that method and tried working outside edge in and about 45 mins later the glass was almost touching the pillar part of the gasket by the time we got there.

The second piece took about 35 mins to do.

What we found worked best for us was to:

* Set outside lower corner into gasket
* Work glass into gasket up the outside pillar, corners are a pain
* Evenly work glass into gasket top/bottom towards center
* Your choice, but we started working glass into pillar part of gasket from bottom to top
* A bit of a chore to work last corner in
* Done

It REALLY helped us to have one person inside working the gasket over the glass slightly ahead of the person on the outside working the gasket over the glass.

We did do one other "safety measure" - As I had both my engine access covers off, I clamped a 3' length 1x1, on the body, just under the gasket - Figured if the glass slipped out, all I had to do was keep it pressed against the body and it would not fall any farther - The glass is very heavy! - But as you probably have your covers on, that option won't be available to you.

As to having both pieces of glass out at the same time.... I had both sides out for well over several months and did not have any issues - Of course there is nothing noteworthy of weight on the front cap and I absolutely/positively did not use any part of the upper lip as a hand hold - The center pillar is pretty flimsy - Though I did, at one point, put a center support under it as I did some roof work.... Just in case I "forgot" the glass was out Wink

Also, when I had the gasket out, I was able to repair the two "leak points" in the upper window edge (near the visor mounting points, where two body parts mate - And yes, there is a visible "crack" at that point - I filled, sanded, and painted over that area for a nice smooth surface.

I realize this glass installation is only sorta like ours and as much as I hate to say it LoL.... After watching it I thought.... Hay, I can do that Smile But no beer was involved LoL

Anyway, just what I did - YmMV
