Those of you with macerator pump... Do you close the gate valve out of the back of the tank after using your macerator? Just curious what others do. I have used my macerator for three years now and LOVE IT! I used to close the gate valve each time but forgot it a few times and wondered..... is it necessary to even close it.

The PO installed the macerator on our coach, so not having seen how it was plumbed I don't have any insight into whether to close or not...
However, like you I try to close it, but sometimes forget, and it seems just fine....

your gate valve is one of those things, use it or loose it. Leave it open, and it may not close.
I have had some residual gunk out of the macerator hose on long drives with the valve open. Nothing to really worry about, but probably better to shut the gate valve then have the hydraulic action of the black water beating on the pump.

The reason you want a valve ahead of the macerator is as insurance for
that nearly inevitable day when the macerator fails. If you've got
contents in the black tank when that day arrives, a closed gate valve will
be a LOT more fun to work with than will having to remove the macerator
with all that stinky stuff backed up by it.
SO, if you want to be spared that agony, keep that valve exercised!

I close mine, but I think it leaks a little. The hose is separate and I keep the outlet capped, so it doesn't really matter.

I cap the end of the hose as well. I didnt think about the "use it or
loose it aspect"....
I think I will try to keep it working. Ken, thanks for your
descriptive explaination. I will try to stay out of the stank!

If you do not close the valve each time, one might find that the gunk will
not allow the valvet to close all the way when your needing to

My macerator (best thing since sliced bread) has 2 gate valves. One between the black tank and the macerator and one after that is connected to the original large backup dump tube. The former is always open and the later is always closed unless in an emergency (macerator has failed) and we need to dump the old fashioned way. In over 20 years we had one macerator failure and it was nice to be able to dump via the slinky we carry.

These valves are designed to stay closed when not being used as particles
will fill the U shaped seal and even the sharp plate cannot overcome them
every time when particles start to dry.
