So we are in southern Arkansas at Lake Ouachita, near Mt Ida which is on AR 270. We left Springfield Monday (yesterday) and took a route 60+ miles longer than the shorter route which would taken me south from Springfield, MO, thru Branson, Harrison, Jasper, Russellville, all on Hwy 7 until it joins up with 28 and then 27 and 270. The route we took lead us to Joplin, down on 49 to Ft Smith AR and then 71 to where it joins with 270. Anyway, we are here and just wondering about taking the "shortest" route vs the "flattest route". The last 70 miles east from Y City, AR were "interesting" but no huge grades, but lots of curves. It has been YEARS since I drove on Hwy 7. I know there is a good sized grade near Jasper. Flattest Route says this shortest route is "easy". I thought I would poll this august body of knowledge, however. I also like to have some shoulder should there be trouble. But lived without a shoulder for about the last 100 miles yeaterday. Heading back Thursday, just wondering if anyone has insights. Yes I am pulling a Sammy. Thanks in advance.
