Bogie greasing. [message #362804] Sun, 14 March 2021 12:42 Go to next message

So I've got the Murray up on blocks with the wheels off. I gave all the bogie arms a good shake to test for wear. My front driver's side bogie has a bit of movement but the rest are good. I have the bogie pins done soon after getting the coach back in 2008 so I'm hoping to keep them in good shape for a while yet.

I've had bogie greasers since I had the pins done. I tried greasing the bogies today and I can only get grease coming out the outer side of the pins, not the inner side. I moved the bogies up and down while greasing and still only grease at the outside edge from either grease fitting of the bogie greaser setup.

Is there a trick to be sure the grease is getting across the entire pin/bushing assembly? The greaser attempts to put grease further into the pin, but there is nothing stopping it from taking the path if least resistance.

Thanks,

I put my thinking cap on and and flared the end of the bogie greaser so it was a snug fit in the bogie pin. Got grease out the inside of the passenger side pins. Now for the driver's side.

I bought bogie greasers years ago and never installed. Air in a balloon applies force equally throughout the vessel. As long as grease is not hardened at the inner hole, this theory should apply.

We have been supplying the one with the flared ends.
It is not perfect as the pins inner holes are never consistent, so when we
inject the grease for the rear section, you will get excess coming
towards the front.
John L is very correct in mentioning the old grease that is inside the pin.
We recommend using a straw and shoving it in all the way then pinch it off
and pull it out as the old grease will come out in the plastic straw.

Something I'd like to mention about hardened grease. Watch out for mixing greases, a synthetic grease and a clay grease are often incompatible and will cause the clay to harden and ruin bearings.

Someone where I worked once added the wrong grease to a bearing on a 1500hp DC motor, it was not pretty.

My trick of flaring the tube so it fit snugly in the pin hole worked. It forced the grease out the rear pin hole and I got grease coming out both sides now.

The flare was ~0.325" and I found I had to increase it to 0.337"

I grease my bogie pins before every trip as I am hoping not to need another bogie rebuild in my lifetime!

Thanks
