Tom,

Here's the link to my custom HVAC album:

or

One thing I did not do, but probably should have, is replace all the vacuum
actuators and controls with electronic ones; it would have been simple
during construction, not so much now.

The GM A6 (not, IIRC, A10) compressor is certainly a great one with very
high capacity. The problem today, IMHO, is the non-availability of good
ones. If they're made new at all, it's not by/under the guidance of GM;
mostly we can only get "rebuilt" ones, which have not, from all I hear,
stood up well. I personally prefer the Sanden and similar clones. You can
see from the album date that I replaced the HVAX in '09. It was at least
2-3 years before that when I installed a Sanden-clone. I THINK I may now
need to add just a little Duracool to it -- it hasn't been touched during
those 12-15 years. :-)

Which brings up another subject: I've still got a 20+ year old partial
tank of R-12 refrigerant -- that's how long it's been since Duracool (and
similar propane/butane based compounds) came to my attention. It/they cool
better, leak less, tolerate any lubricant, and are not significantly
dangerous.

As far as minor mods to the HVAC, if your system does not use recirculated
air for cooling, look at bit.ly/2OdqkJC -- why cool outside air? And be
sure the door seals in the outside HVAC box are in good shape. The
conditions of the various damper doors are also important -- but very
difficult to do anything about.
