Dont let others work on your rig! Guy installed wrong pump, whats the proper one? Showing all kinds for 455 olds engine. Engine surges and fuel libe freeze is an issue. Old pump worked flawlessly for over a decade on CA etholated gas! Looks like there is a bolt jammed into one of the pump ports? Wtf

that is a common thing....

there are 2 port and 3 port fuel pumps for the 455, and usually when you go to the store, they will get out the 3 port. something to do with A/C or not, or the years.

it has been a while, but I remember just asking for a 75 torornado pump, and if that comes out as a 3 port, then I ask for a 74,, or a 73, and eventually they get the right 2 port pump from the back room. This method is used on a few other parts too, like power steering pumps.

the 3 port pump is also installed on purpose. many people would use that 3rd port(return line), and plumb it around and back into the fuel filler neck. the claim is that "helps" vapor lock.

Shan,

You're running a Toronado fuel pump for one with the air conditioning
option -- it has a fuel return port, which is where the bolt's been
inserted. It's a common practice, which usually only results in another
leak possibility, from all I've heard.

At one time the correct pump and the "3-line" pump had the same NAPA part
number except for the last digit, but looking at NAPAOnLine.com, I see only
one listing -- for the 3-line pump. :-(

Apparently you'll have to shop elsewhere and check the configuration before
paying for it.

So this is a timely topic for me.

I am replacing my dash AC compressor. While removing it I noticed that my fuel pump is a three port with a one inch plugged rubber tube coming off the third port! The tube looks old, and has a bolt clamped to plug it. I can just imagine this thing leaking. The consequences of that are either a fire or pumping all the fuel out. Either way I am not happy with this situation and intend to remedy it before driving the coach anymore.

So, does anyone know where I can find a two port pump?

If I cannot find a two port, I suppose I could get a new three port mechanical pump and solder/TIG the third port closed. Or has anyone converted to an electric fuel pump? Is there a kit available?

Regards,
Pete

So, I should have looked at Applied's website before posting my question. It appears that they carry both the two port mechanical pump and an electric conversion kit.

Do not use the common rubber caps with hose clamp as found in auto parts stores for return port. They are not E10 (or probably even E0) resistant and will check and spray fuel in a short time, like a year. As they say “injury or death may result”.
