I am trying to help new GMC friends - met because of the Blacklist. They
purcahsed a nice 1976 Palm Beach in Washington, stopped and had some work
done by DJ Eberhart and hhit the road south. Along the way, they were
unable to start the coach and had the battery and alternator replaced. The
replacement one is a 60 amp Delco made in the USA. Still having problems
later, they replaced the battery yet again. Finally, while making their way
down the coast in the Redwoods, the coach died yet again on a bad corner.
They had it towed to an electrical shop in Eureka that quoted them $200/hr
with an estimate of 6 - 7 hours to diagnose the problem. That is when they
called me (and DJ). The following is what we have done so far to
troubleshoot.

1. took reading from each of the studs on the combiner to ground
Both battery terminals read 2 v. Alt read zero
2. Took reading from alternator main stud to alternator body zero v
3. Took reading from two other wires plugged into alternator
smaller one - either brown or green, hard to tell - 2 volts when to alt.
body, zero to engine block
larger one - either white or yellow, again hard to tell zero volts

Need direction on what to check next tomorrow. Owners are learning to use a
multimeter!!

Another item - po had connected positive cable to battery to a cutoff
switch and then to battery. It is possible that one morning they tried to
start the coach with the battery "turned off"

Any help would be good. I think they are going to make wonderful new
owners, especially with their willingness to learn and their drive back to
New York still ahead.

Thanks,

Fay Curtis
