Wow,

Tomorrow I am off to service the refrigeration on a clients boat. Years ago I got it going by changing it to HC-12a (brand uncertain but probably Duracool). I know that his system may need more than a single can, so I went on-line shopping.....

10 to 14$US per can!! I can actually buy real Dupont R-12 for that much now.

The cost has gone up because it is more popular now.

Don’t forget that you only need about 3 cans of Duracool vs. 6 cans on R-12.
So, its still 1/2 as expensive as R-12 and it works better.

You can find equivalent brands to Duracool for about 6 o 7 a can in case quantities.

I too have used frosty cool with same results as Duracool. As others have said, takes about 3 cans to get 20lbs on low side at 1500rpm. Really has worked good for me.

Just ordered 12 6oz can. My Birch has R134 conversion and it has mostly leaked off in five years.

After i put a vacuum on it and find the leaks, How much Duracool should it take ?

Sometimes just a little less than 3 cans.

Dave:

If you can, you might be better off doing a nitrogen purge before pulling the vacuum and recharging the system.

I’ve always find it easier to “spray for bubbles” when looking for leaks.

I recently replaced all the O rings but after pulling a vacuum I found it would slowly leak down. I wanted to pressurize the system to check for leaks. I didn’t have a nitrogen tank so I used compressed air. I drained off all condensate from the tank and charged the air conditioner to 20 psi. I found my leak with soap bubbles but it was at the connection of the low pressure hose from my gauges. I tightened it with pliers and the leak stopped. Realizing that in addition to the air I also had introduced some moisture, I left the vacuum pump on all night. I then charged it and no more leaks

That sounds like a plan!

I get a kick out of watching the little puffs of moisture that the vacuum pump successfully drags out of even the best kept system.

No substitute for a good hard vacuum on a refrigeration system!
