After reading on the forum extensively about windows, here is what I have found about my coach.
The front (living room?) sliders are old style, multipiece frames with LOF glass in them. You have to open the screen to get to the handles, which are on the ends, not the middle.
The back four vertical sliders in the kitchen/dinette area are new style with PPG glass in them.
The passenger side big slider is, perhaps, a driver's side window. The window slides from the rear forward, not from the front backward.
The drain holes in the frame are at the bottom.
Both big sliders are very difficult to operate. I can do it, my wife cannot.
Here's the questions:
I saw Jim Bound's short video on new windows, but I need info on how to install new felts on the big sliders.
Do I have to take the glass out to change the felts?
Is it possible to remove the glass out of the passenger side, and then flip them 180 degrees vertically so the handle is in front as it should be?
Or is it indeed a driver's side frame and cannot be changed in this manner?

Greg,
I've never worked on the first design windows and do not know if the glass can be removed without disassembling the window frame. When I pointed out the passenger side's "inside-out" sashes on your coach I mentioned that the early GMC windows were held together with a big band clamp. Maintenance Manual X7425 covers the first design window procedures starting on page 1-6 and shows the window frame being dissembled for glass removal.
The early windows didn't hang on to the paint as well as the later windows. I've gotten very good results with self-etching primer and Rustoleum Professional Enamel Semi Gloss Black.

Richard: Thank you for the reply. I've been studying on this ever since you pointed out that the window was backwards.
Hopefully, Jim Bounds or someone who has experience with the early style windows will answer my questions.

The early windows come out as a unit. They are held in by screws thru an aluminum strip on the inside snd into the window frame. Sealing is via whatever goop was used between the frame and body. Depending on that adhesive/sealer, the window may come out easily or not. Once out the frame has to be disassembled to remove the glass. Kinda tricky to get back together right.

Don’t know, but I have a spare set of side windows in their frames. Perhaps I’ll experiment and let you know.

I’m in the process of redoing the windows on my 1974 (early style windows) and I did have to take the frame apart to remove the glass. It is not difficult, there is a metal band (basically a giant hose clamp design) holding the frame sections together; with the band off the frame comes apart fairly easy. I bought new felt glides and weatherstripping from Applied and it was a great improvement to the windows.

Mines a 73. I did the passenger side big window last year and one thing I will do different on subsequent ones is set up a large plastic (banquet) table to assemble on. It isn't that it's hard to reassemble, just can be troublesome to get all the parts to behave while you get that band back in place and tightened without scratching up the repainted frame (failed there...) At least with the table I'll be able to save the paint better and be working at a more advantageous height. Also watch and test glass fitment to make sure the moving section actually moves thru it's whole range before you reinstall. Getting the stationary glass to slide into the rubber gasket all the way can be difficult also even with lube. Just takes a little patience, tho.

So from everyone's postings, I can confirm that the window has to be removed from the coach to disassemble it. Someone else said that you can change the felts without removing the windows.
But my main question still has not been answered in a definite YES, YOU CAN or NO, YOU CAN'T fashion.

If you flip the glass 180 degrees vertically would that leave the handle in
the same place by put it on the opposite side of the glass?
I don’t believe I understand what exactly you are trying to accomplish. If
you dismantle the windows they can be reassembled so the front part is the
moving or the rear is the moving part. On my 77 the rearward piece of glass
was the movable and the leading edge of the movable glass sat inside the
trailing edge of the fixed glass. This keeps rain from filling your coach
when driving down the highway in the rain.

You can’t just rotate the frame 180* and reinstall on same side because the drain holes would be at the top vs the bottom.
I’ll be pulling a window out this weekend and I can check for other options if you don’t have an answer by then.

Can you reverse the sides of the windows? Put the driver’s side onto the passenger side and vice Versa. That would seem to achieve what you are trying to do and you wouldn’t have to disassemble the windows.

Greg's GMC has an unusual window configuration and the two front large sliders are from an earlier coach installed in his later coach. When I first saw his coach and noticed the reversed sashes on the one side I thought the same thing - that the windows had been installed on the wrong sides. I've seen that before. But only one window has the sash opening the wrong way. Either the PO picked up two of the same side windows and likely didn't notice or reassembled the window incorrectly.

After another conversation with Chuck Boyd, I looked very carefully at the passenger side window. The Part #18 latch strike is installed with two phillips head screws as in the parts manual. The passenger side strike as has been discussed is toward the rear of the coach, and it should be at the front. Since there are no screw holes at the front of the frame, and the drains are downward as they should be, then my conclusion is that I indeed have two driver's side windows. There can be no other explanation. Why, I don't know. As Richard said, I have a late model coach and all of the windows except the two large sliders are the second type window. So a PO put in two first type sliders, both of them configured as driver's side models. From what everyone has said, the frame and glass configuration can be changed while the window is out of the coach.
So, I never did get an answer to my major question, can I take the windows out without removing the frame from the coach?
I'm tired of beating this horse. Thank you everyone who took the time to answer and forward your greatly appreciated opinions. For now, I'm just gonna live with it. I've got lousy brakes and a stripped carb inlet calling me right now.
