After years of Microsoft as a national magazine editor, I switched to WPS
Office on retirement. It's free. Mimics Word, Excel and PowerPoint
effortlessly. Plus it can convert a .doc to a PDF and visa versa.

I had Corel, kinda learned how to use it, thought it was great, then they
went to charging school. Every time I went to use it, they wanted more
money. I finally gave up using it altogether. If you were using it every
day, it has all the bells and whistles one could ever need. Just not a good
fit for the occasional user. That's my take on it, anyway. I am a P.C.
user, not Apple.

I'm with Justin - We use Google Drive for everything as my content is
available on every machine i own without effort. But... if the Fear of
Googles keep you up at night, why not use OpenOffice?

I used Open Office for quite a while, but it started having problems. Found out that the Libre Office branch of Open Office was updated much more frequently. Been working great!

I have been using Open Office for years and years and years and like it better than Excel. I came from the Lotus 123 Crowd.

I totally agree on Open Office, (with a barely memorable fondness for 123 and WordPerfect!), but years ago when I tried it, I'm sure it's improved if still available, I had trouble with some .xlsx translations. Especially with 123 fonts alone can be a problem, and is limiting factor on using approach. a) I was normally communicating and sharing with others using Excel, and b) especially on Word I was using some fairly rare optional features, such as automatic table of contents and appendixes, necessitating a written manual for reference from eBay like the old days. It would still be my recommendation for "shareware" personal use, but I haven't stayed remotely fluent on either what's currently available or Open Office availability let alone updated capability.
It was a VERY painful transition ramping up to Excel after over a decade of of extensive 123. Thank goodness they had the 123 translator built in.
Still catch myself using some 123 keystrokes!
I also occasionally check the internet for Lotus Suite updates, but IBM stopped after Version 9 something. Still have the latest version loaded if all else fails.
I've spent hours trying to resurrect Approach, I've never found ANYTHING remotely as user friendly and flexible.
I just keep dreaming for a perfect world.
If you ever want to bite the painful learning curve of Office bullet, as I said there's some affordable older and academic versions with permanent licencees on eBay or your local college bookstore.
They try to get the younguns addicted on the cheap, a lesson they learned from the cigarette companies. Of course someday they will purposely outdate even those, forcing everyone to go online with annual renewal. At that point I'll either reassess my approach, or will be in a state where I'm no longer using a computer!

There must be SOME Visicalc users out there....not current users but that's the "Killer App" that got me to buy a TRS-80 (48K Memory w/ 2 floopy disc) for my job. Spent $2,500. of MY OWN money (no printer) - No regrets really.
In a related matter, I'm still on Word (2007 I think) -I'd like to find a simple (AND FREE) program or app that converts any doc to PDF. Any suggestions?

FreePDF is used as a printer driver. Therefore, anything that can be
printed, can be made into a PDF.
Libre/OpenOffice is able to export to PDF as well.

Oh, yeah. I started out on Visicalc -- when it was the first and only
choice, in 1978, IIRC. That's the same year two programmers and I began
the development of accounting and scheduling programs for radio stations --
for a station owner who had the first GMC Motorhome I ever saw. When we
got the programs going, he set up a computer desk in the GMC to give
on-site demonstrations. The original development was on TRS-80's with 4
floppy discs. Before we were done, the R-2000 had come along and he became
the first OEM for the equivalent Tandy 2000. So our first deliveries were
Tandy 2000's with two 8" floppy drives. The hard disk (10MB, IIRC) came
available about the time we sold all the rights to the programs to him and
moved on.

For printing PDFs....
I use 'CutePDF', which is a printer driver for Windows. Once installed, it will show up in the list of printers to select in any program's 'Print' function. Select it, and it will print as a PDF and ask for a location to store it.
