Our old 1997 Macerator has crapped out, and I'm putting a new one in on Saturday. The new one is a similar JABSCO model 18590, just like the one its replacing, so I should not have to rearrange any plumbing. My intent is to flush the black tank with the gravity hose while the rear of the coach is squatted down low, and then, back the rear of the coach onto the ramps so that the coach is nose down to remove and replace the macerator. I hope this plan works to reduce the messiness of this project. Anyone have any tips or tricks for this operation?

When mine died it was after I had emptied everything, so not too messy. But check the OD of the outlet on that new jabsco relative to your hose before you install it. I found mine (the direct replacement) was just a 'titch too big for the old tube - I had to take my dremel and sand down the lip a bit. Would have been much easier to do before I had installed and wired it all in Smile

Thanks Deb, I'll check it out before bolting it down. Good advice.

While you've got apart, if you haven't already, you might want to put a gate valve in between the tanks and the macerator. That way you don't have to empty the tanks to do maintenance. See this.

Hi Larry,
That is a good tip. I hope you and Lucy are doing well. We haven't seen you two since Tallahassee. Our coach already has two gate valves. One is before the macerator, and the other is before the gravity dump. I still want to flush the tank before the operation. Thanks for the response.

While you have it out you definitely should put in a valve before the macerator to make it easier to get it out without making a mess.
This is especially important if you have to do it at a campground. I wrote an article for the GMCMI magazine, Page 21 of the Summer 2018 issue of GMC Vintage RVing. This can be found on the GMCMI.com site.

The article was on rebuilding the macerator.

I now carry a spare macerator with me and can change it out very quickly with the use of this valve.
