I am getting ready to head on a 4000 mile journey with my GMC. Myself, and 12 and 13 year old daughers going from St. Cloud, MN accross hwy 2 through Glacier park. Down to cottage grove, oregon. Then back East, hoping to make a drive through yellowstone. that is like 2700 miles greater then any other trip I have taken in the past 10 years, and I will be about 1200 miles further away from my Garage then my GMC has ever been in the past 10 years. theoretically, I think my GMC is now up to the task, but there is always that possibility of a catastrophic mechanical failure or hitting a deer or accident.
I have always had AAA RV and it has served me well when it has been needed. Even when I have been out 500 miles, I felt fine to easily get the coach home in a catastrophe with the 200 mile tow. Even if I had to drop it off at somebody's I knew and go fetch it with a trailer at a later date. Thank goodness I have never had to do that.
I am considering getting a different tow insurance to have on hand for this trip, but now that i look into them, I am a little concerned it might be no use to me.(trying to figure out how to tow further then 200 miles if needed). I was considering that Good sams is not that expensive, but then I see it says "nearest service center". that term gives more grey area, then what FMCA terms "nearest Qualified Repair Center"
FMCA is twice the cost as good sams.
I do not qualify for aarp. not for another 6 years anyway...
any thoughts as to what different towing providers might a "service center" as compared to a qualified repair center? anybody have the fine print on good sams?
"qualified service center"to work on our GMC's seems to be a matter of opinion in some cases.
worst case scenario, I do have the ability to chase down the coach with a duramax and trailer. but that still costs a ton of time and diesel fuel.

Last summer when the Stretch developed the Death Rattle, Allstate Motor Club towing took the coach from Shasta, City California to Manny's in San Jose. 305 miles, no questions. Only just over an hour from first phone call to arrival of of the correct size wrecker. I believe it costs $109 per year. Probably had it for 15-16 years, but think I am still ahead of the game.

Yes. AAA RV premier. so a 200 mile town, and 3 more 100 mile tows.
I should of clarified, I am looking at adding to the AAA RV premier. I have been paying that $180 or something a year for the AAA RV premier for as long as I can remember. I know even at $1800 spent over a 10 year period, I have had the GMC towed 3 times(all less then 100 miles), had a couple work trucks towed- I rarely do that unless it is near my renewal and i have no used any tows. Have done lock out, had my jeep towed accross town because I did not want to change a belt in a parking lot. I have also had friends trucks towed to my house becasue I have a heated garage and they dont when I have helped them out with things.
so AAA is a value, and I am sorry if everybody's rates go up over the years because of me.
so I am trying to see if it is worth spending money on additional tow insurance and if I stand a chance of convincing the tow insurance that the nearest qualified service facility is in MN. however without the word "qualified" that means they can tow me to the nearest camping world?

Hi John,
My State Farm insurance includes towing. Wording is tow to nearest QUALIFIED facility. The two times I have been towed, 150 and 200 miles, when I called, they said they would tow me 25 miles to an RV dealer near there. I quoted the "Nearest qualified facility" from their policy. Then told them that this motorhome is a 1978 GMC, with FWD. Then told them that this is a speciality vehicle and that there were several "qualified" facilities in the country....One in Sandusky Michigan, two in Florida, and one in California. Now, which one would you like to tow me too? After a long pause (I guess they were checking the wording) I said...look...The nearest facility for me is my home in Menomonie Wisconsin. With that they agreed to tow me back home. I then picked the towing service from Menomonie and they came and got me with a Landau flatbed. Cost was just over $1000. Covered every penny of it. Maybe check your insurance for wording and see if "Qualified" is there and if they mean what they say. JWID

Mac- EXACTLY. I don't want to pay $100-$200 for towing coverage that would force me to tow to a Camping world or other RV service place. Insult to injury!
Larry- I think it is your story now that started the light bulb to go off in my head. I think there are a few other GMC'rs that was able to do that as well, but not sure what tow insurance they had. I was ready to jump on the good sam's, but then I see they left out "qualified" in their sales literature. fmca does have"qualified in their literature, but it is twice the cost of good sams.
I have amfam insurance, and you probably know why- I am looking into their roadside assistance fine print. I do not have that on our policy right now.
I know my driveway is a "qualified" service facility. But I/we also know of one more in MN that actually has a business name and track record of GMC's being towed to that location. and that location is an easy AAA tow to my driveway... so there are options there.

OK, found some fine print on good sams.
https://images.goodsam.com/goodsamroadside.com/pdf/GRA53472_B_Plat_Complete_MBB_web.pdf
in there it states:
"Sam Platinum Complete Roadside Assistance pays 100% of the towing fees for
the delivery of your vehicle to the nearest professional service center capable and
willing to repair your vehicle.
so pretty much from what I know, the closest place of "capable and willing" service centers between MN and oregon to do major work on my GMC is pretty much limited to my driveway.

I have driven that route many, many times in July from Minn to Fargo and up to US2 to the International Peace Garden, Bismarc, Williston, Glacier. I use to do it every two years. I might do it this summer again if the State dept ever sends me my renewed passport and border crossing card. I always end up in Canada somewhere along the way. I have been waiting for 3 months now.
There are only a few major? towns to be towed too. I do not know where I would take a GMC on that route. I did break a speedo cable once and blew a hole in a muffler on another trip.

Jon,
I've been very satisfied with Allstate's RVRoadHelp for over 21 years.
I've been towed several times under that coverage, including the day after
I bought the GMC. I think the 384 miles home from Tupelo, MS was the
longest. I HAVE had to elevate my case to a supervisor a time or two, but
in the end the "nearest QUALIFIED repair facility" argument has won out.
When I start rattling off Applied GMC in Newark, CA; Sirum Services in
Okeechobee, FL; etc., etc., they quickly decide that taking me to a
facility I specify here in Americus isn't such a bad deal. (I DID have to
tell them to take me to Beaver Racing Engines because they wouldn't accept
"Henderson's Garage" -- but the driver did since it was 3 miles closer.)
IIRC, it's $119 per year, but you may get a better "Introductory Deal" of
$69 or so.
Ken H.
PS: Oh yeah, despite my cancellation fears, I've never heard one peep out
of them after a tow. KH

Jon,
My story was similar to Larry's. When we broke down on the way back from Las Vegas a few years ago, we contacted Progressive, whit whom we have our insurance. They would tow us to the "nearest professional service center capable and willing to repair your vehicle."
They wanted to tow us back about 15 - 20 miles to the Big-O Tire shop in Wickenburg. We told them that we didn't think the Big-O in Wickenburg would be able to overhaul an engine and transmission in a 1975 GMC Front wheel drive motorhome. They said that if that was the case, they'd tow us to a Buick/GMC dealer in Mesa (at least we were going in the right direction). If they wouldn't take it, they would tow us somewhere else, etc.
We offered to call ahead to both places to see if they would or could work on the GMC. Both said no. Kathy told the guy on the other end of the phone "I'm broken down on the side of the road and I don't have anything better to do than to argue with you". After some back and fourth, they finally saw it her way and agreed to pay for the tow back to our house in Tucson.
I don't know what they would have done if we were more than the 170 miles from home than we were. I wouldn't have been too unhappy to pay for part of that tow, because I'm sure I saved at least 50% of the repair cost by being able to do the repairs at home, in my driveway.
