Just wondering if anyone knows the weight of the empty shell of our GMC's? I'm looking at building an A frame to lift the body off the frame and was wondering if that information was around. I know I can over build it but would rather save the extra expense as the wood will most likely become firewood later. We're talking empty to the bare insulation here but with the windshields in place.

Hal,
Don’t know the weight, but I do know that I’ve supported my full 26’ shell using 6x6 pressure treated posts as cross beams under the body. Two 10’ posts will bow noticeably when supported with cribbing at a width that allows rolling the chassis out. I used 4 posts to share the weight and stay on the safe side.

I did that in 2004, under a carport. I stood 4- 4X4's vertically on the
concrete and attached
the top of each one to the 2X4 bottom chord of the carport trusses. I used 4
come along's
one out each rear window and each front window with the cable attached near
the top of
each 4X4. Was a piece of cake no effort on the come along's, of course I
kept the lift even.
Don’t remember my weight guesstimate for certain , but I think it was under
3000 lb.
In a free standing configuration 4X4's would be more than adequate with
attachment points
near the top of the A where the verticals and horizontal come together. The
most important
thing would be stabilizing the A frame with guy wires or 2X4's so that it
can't shift side to side.
If You can find them the pictures should still be on the photo site, as I
recall it was listed under
Projects the coach name was Smokey and My name is Marsh Wilkes, you may need
to get Billy to
help You find the pictures.

although I got a hell of a start

Clarification:

I had removed all of the plywood flooring at that point, I was weighing
stuff
as I took it out (list lost) but I think the flooring was 600 or 700 lb.
Still I don’t see any problem with your plan. Just work safe.

Hal,

I have four 10” 3000 lb castors and custom brackets which will carry the
whole enchilada ( complete coach) plus allow you to roll it around like a
roller skate assuming you have a smooth floor. Two castors are fixed and
two are swiveled. The attachment points are the joint between the side
rails and cradle at the front and directly below the bogies rear. If you
are pulling the body off the chassis like it sounds, it would be simple to
re purpose the castors as outriggers with steel beams. Available at what I
paid.

I finally found the pictures.
Sadly the detailed captions explaining the pictures
were lost in some kind of photo site crash several years
ago. I was installing an aluminum floor, for numerous reasons,
but I was not able to complete the project, I had to move on.
If You look at the pictures you can see how I rigged the comealong's
to lift the body.
