These GMC's, and their owners are in an interesting situation. The basic purpose is to use to travel in. Then it becomes a hobby. That's another angle of enjoyment. And it's important to keep that in mind. It can become a point of pride. That I did the work. And try to keep it at a hobby level. An adventure.
We use our GMC a lot. I built a building for it. With central heat/air. Then an air filtration system. So, I never need to winterize it. It's ready to go all the time. With Linda in a wheelchair. Our trips. I treat them like Apolo 13. Failure is NOT an option. Period. If we had a problem of any kind while on the road. We just can't pull over. And get out. We have an 8 ft ramp that comes out from under the 36-inch widened side door. That I widened. From its original 29 inch. Linda needs that 8 ft ramp to get out. Ever see a highway that didn't have a ditch next to the pavement? Our 78 Royale was mostly a traveling hobby. Then a fire in Neb on Aug 30th 2015. Mike and Billie Kelley were there. They were just glad to see that it wasn't theirs burning. At least that's what Mike told me,( Privet joke between us ) We got dealt lemons. So, I made lots of lemonade. As I'm an optimistic sort. And look for the best in everything. But I keep the hobby idea alive. I had to get only a 78 Royale rear bath. To make our new dream. And found/bought one that Nov. Then proceeded to take it completely apart. Inside, and underneath. I even was able to power was the entire inside. Gave Linda a note pad. Told her to make a list of absolutely every dream idea that she ever wanted in our next GMC. Then a week to make extensive detailed drawing of the interior to be built. She even got a large cloths hamper, and linin closet. She thought she had me stumped on those two. All work was done in solid walnut to match what was there. Everything on the bottom was blasted, and painted. The bottom is/was as clean as the inside. Then. We replaced anything. Everywhere that could quit someday. It was back on the road at the end of the fallowing March. 5 months to the day of buying it. I was a man on a mission. Did everything myself. No help. It got hard to keep the hobby idea alive a couple of times at 2 AM. ( Marine Corp helped developed my drive. ) But the hobby idea lived on. In truth. I enjoyed doing it a lot. ( Does this explain where my Comfort Zone is? )
Skipping GMCMI events for a year or so. We've come up with some other things we need to try. Life can be a wonderful adventure. If you just let it. Our GMC has been a wonderful addition to our lives. Hope that yours does the same for you. Home is an address that you come back too. With a big grin on your face.
